We love them and have only found them on one trip. Does any one know when apple banana's are available? We'll be down the middle of May, AGAIN! Just can't stop!

They are the Banana that most people grow on the Caye rather than being commercially available. Find a local that has them and hope their ripening coincides with your visit. I have a half dozen in my Yard that all tend to ripen at once and as nice as they are 50 bananas that last three days is a bit much to eat!

Phil, you can freeze them and use them for banana bread or other recipes. Apple bananas make great banana bread. If you have a surplus next time, let me know and I'll make you some!

I ask an older local woman how I could tell when the apple bananas in my back yard where ripe and ready to pick and she said ..."When they are gone!" :-)

I recently learned to cut a small bunch at a time from the top of the whole bunch, working from the top down, over several weeks. They ripen quicker off the tree giving you more time rather than having the whole lot ripen at once. Freezer is full of good stuff - not stuff that's good for you - so no space there for a mere Banana.

Bob - it would be nice for you to stop by Birdland. The front of my house is under construction but the birds don't seem to mind. If my door is open I am home! Criminals WARNING. If my door is closed Pepe is home!

Dr. I read your profile - how loose does one have to be to get into your bananas? LOL Honestly, do you live on the island? Can I get some shoots from you?

You could get into my bananas anytime. Loose is good,I'm a bad boy, but not a requirement. I'm on northern end of the penensula, not on the Caye. But I do have some apple bananas grow year round and have been planting more. I keep some in that have ripen in the freezer and that has worked out well

I have a banana patch - is that what it is called? It can't be called an orchard. I orignally had two apple banana plants but they grew legs and walked away. If you are not on the caye - where is the 'penensula' you are on?

My wife calls them baby bananas, but you really won't know they are apple until you taste them. Tacogirl, that has been the only stand I have found them. Maybe we'll be lucky this time!!

Most vendors keep the apple banana's on the hand and hang them towards the back of their booth. They cost twice ($2 BZ for 5) what the regular ones do but keep much longer. When I find them I usually by several dollars worth. Think of it - regular banana's cost a dime each here! I try to eat two a day along with one apple. The cost of the apple ($1.50 US for small ones)makes up for the savings. Does anyone know where these apples are now coming from? They are crisp, juicey and sweet but the skins are not chewable. The birds appreiate the donations.

We have been buying "baby bananas" here for months, so I guess there is a different kind. The ones we buy are on a big stalk and they cut off the number you want ("one hand"). They are delicious and do keep a lot longer than the regular long bananas, which I don't particularly enjoy. I like the tarter taste of the "babies".
I haven't bought an apple since arriving in San Pedro. Have not missed them enough to succumb to what I knew would be high prices. I used to love apples in the US, but only certain ones -- pink ladies, cameos and some of the other newer varieties. Golden delicious and red delicious are very un-delicious to me!

Reading your reply BeBelize reminds me that I miss spy apples. Not sure I've had that kind! We bought some "pineapple bananas" at Maria's the other day. Sure enough, they were bright yellow inside (but didn't taste like pineapple). They were small. The most recent ones we bought looked the same, but were pale inside, so I am assuming they're the apple bananas. Yummy!
