BEL Reports on Impact of Weather on Power System Performance

Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has been experiencing sporadic unplanned power outages on its system over the past three days in different areas across the country.

These interruptions in power supply, which affected pockets of customers in the Corozal, Belize, Stann Creek, Toledo and Belize Districts were primarily due to lightning strikes on power lines during the passage of unstable weather conditions in the affected areas.

One power outage in the Stann Creek District was caused by a kite getting entangled in high voltage power lines. The company urges the public to practice safe kite flying by following these tips:

∑ Always fly kites in open areas, in dry weather and with clear visibility
∑ Never fly kites near power lines
∑ Always call 0-800-BEL-CARE (0-800-235-2273) if your kite gets caught in a power line

BEL thanks customers for their patience during these recent unplanned power outages.
