OK, now that I've seen the wonders of Altun Ha, I'm interested in reading more about Mayan culture and history. Can anyone recommend some books to start with? I'm not overly interested in myths or legends, more like historical or "every day life" type books. TIA!

You might like Time Among the Maya by Ronald Wright, 1989. It's about the author's journey through modern Maya areas.

For an archeological perspective, The Maya by Michael D. Coe, first published in 1966, is the classic introduction, but it primarily focuses on archeological sites.

The World of the Ancient Maya, by John S. Henderson, 1981,is also excellent, and it gives more of a historical and cultural perspective.

"A Forest of Kings" by Linda Schele and David Freidel is considered by many as the most complete and accurate books about the Maya. I was originally told about the book from an old "shaman" at Tikal. If you can find a copy of "Carribean" by James Michner, the first few chapters deal with the Mayans of the Yucatan. Its a historical novel, but it paints a clear picture. PS. After finishing "Carribean", it makes a great door jam.
