Just wondering, for anyone familiar with Ambegris Caye and Placencia, from a point of living at least 6 months out of the year in Belize, how would you compare the two?

I realize is a very subjective, open-ended question, but perhaps the opinions may prove en-lighting.

Thanks in advance.

Placencia - nice beach (sand fleas) slow pace
Ambergris - much larger, faster paced, more selection.
Reality is only an illusion that occurs due to a lack of alcohol

I disagree somewhat with Champion on the assessment that AC is "faster paced".

San Pedro is faster paced for sure, but there are many locations Ambergris Caye where you'll find a privacy and quiet that is a near impossibility in Placencia.

The differences between the two locations are many - the reef is close to AC, but far from Placencia so if you dive or snorkel AC may be a better fit.

If you like mountains as well as beach then having a car in Placencia may be what you want to do - hop in and drive to your next adventure.

Services like doctors, dentist, legal, etc - all much easier to deal with in San Pedro.

Bear in mind that you asked this question on an AC message board - most of us compared the two locations and chose AC. That is as much a commentary on "us" as on the place.
Both locations are in Belize and that is pretty fantastic.
Both locations face the Caribbean Sea and that too is great.

In the end you pick the place you feel at home. Only you can make that determination.

For the most part I agree with Diane. One thing I disagree with is the issue of privacy and quiet in Placencia. Most times I have a large stretch of the beach all to myself. I'm at the north edge of the village (10 minute walk to the south end of the sidewalk) and feel it is very private.
With that said, I'm still trying to decide which place I want to live. Both have great qualities. It is all about what you like and value most.

Thanks for the feedback; Diane, Champion and Islenutt. I live in Placencia now, even own a business there. Oftentimes Placencia feels a bit small socially, meaning as to places to go out and social functions, besides the bar scene. The fishing spots also are quite far, from a fly fishing point of view (clear, white sand wadeable areas).

Islenutt, how long you been there? Still not decided?

Again thanks for the replies.
