Tragedy and misfortune was averted with the quick action of a boat captain, his diving crew and dive shop personnel as they immediately rescued several tourist divers who happened to find themselves wading in open waters outside the reef after their dive boat capsized.

Rough sea conditions were the cause of a capsized boat just outside the reef in the popular dive spot known as the Tuffy Channel (break on the reef) that is located right across downtown San Pedro. The incident occurred close to midday, today, June 7, 2012.

Ambergris Today was first on the scene thanks to Armando Gonzalez of Armando’s Water Taxi, and caught a Seaduced boat being pulled inside the reef by an Aqua Dives Boat.

Seaduced vessel and passengers flip during rough sea

A group of divers traveling in a vessel chartered by Ramon’s Village Dive Shop are tonight lucky to be alive following a boating accident which occurred a mile and a half from San Pedro Town, off the coast of Ambergris Caye. This morning, shortly after eleven o’clock, a thirty-seven foot boat, the property of Seaduced by Belize, overturned in an area known as Tuffy Channel. The sea conditions earlier today were choppy and the rolling waves crashed into the skiff causing it to capsize. Swift response from other boaters in the area prevented serious injuries and casualties. While the mishap went unreported, News Five understands that tourists onboard the sunken vessel were immediately spirited to Ramon’s Village Resort. The boat was later recovered by a team of divers with assistance from the Belize Coast Guard.

Boat capsizes at sea

The San Pedro Sun can confirm that there was an accident at sea shortly after 11AM on Thursday June 7th. The boat involved in the incident belongs to a local tour operator that was chartered by Ramon’s Village Divers. Information is still shortcoming as the incident was unreported to all the relevant authorities, but according to multiple sources, the boat along with some divers, overturned outside of the reef off Ambergris Caye.

It's always exciting going through the cut but I have not heard a dive boat capsizing in it. The boat left the dock at 11:15 and by 11:35 8 divers, captain and crew were safely back at Ramons dock... and no one in the group was talking about the accident? Nobody was seriously hurt. Thats very good news. Glad I carry DAN insurance.
