Residents of San Ignacio and surrounding areas are pushing for newer more stringent laws to regulate taxi operations in Belize.  The push for the new regulations comes on the heels of the murder this week of thirteen year old Jasmine Lowe.  Mary Carriddi is the sponsor of the new proposed law, which if approved would be called the Jasmine Taxi Law.

MARY CARIDDI – Sponsor of new taxi regulations

“Too many taxis are involved with crime in our country.  They’re able to take their license plates off the vehicle and change it with another one and we can’t catch up with them.  We need to institute this for the protection of our citizens and also the taxi drivers.”

“Now what does this law entail?  What’s included?”

MARY CARIDDI – Sponsor of new taxi regulations

“Alright, first of all, we want numbers issued to every taxi and to be painted unto the taxi’s front, back and both sides.  All taxi drivers should have a background check and should be Belizean nationals.  Each district should have a set colour and all taxis working in that district should be painted that colour.  Each taxi should pay for an individual trade license in their town and a registry of the taxi number and is licensed to drive that taxi should be sent out to all police in traffic department.  A four inch by eight inch photo ID should be displayed on the dash board in clear view.  All taxis should have plexi glass partition between the front and back seat.  All taxis should be inspected every six months for safety purposes.”

The proposed Jasmine Taxi Law has seven main points, as explained by Carriddi.

MARY CARIDDI – Sponsor of new taxi regulations

“Well if they’re not capable then they shouldn’t be carrying our loved ones.  Ok, if they’re not a safe, secure driver and vehicle they should not have our precious cargo in it.

“From the time this law was proposed it has picked up a lot of traction.   I understand that even the Special Envoy for Women and Children are fully behind this.”

MARY CARIDDI – Sponsor of new taxi regulations

Yes sir, Ms. Kim Simplis has talked to us and she is behind it a hundred percent.  So all the different groups they are pushing it.  We want this to happen as soon as possible.  This law should be able to be enacted within three months and it will not put any stress on our traffic department.  We already have them in play.  If they institute this, no taxi should be able to be licensed unless they follow these rules.”

The proposed Jasmine Taxi Law is currently being circulated in San Ignacio and Santa Elena and will be shared with participants of a candlelight vigil which is scheduled for tonight in San Ignacio town.  According to the sponsors of the proposed law, the new initiative has the support of the Special Envoy for Women and Children.

Proponent of Jasmin's Taxi Law says it will ultimately benefit both the taxi operators and users of taxis.
