Hello all:

I'm headed to Placencia with the family this July. First trip there. While they bake on the beach, I want to fish. As such, I need the following advice please: (and... please forgive newbie questions)

1. Shore fishing - what rod/tackle/bait do I need? What species am I after? I won't bring much from Canada, so if anyone knows of a store that sells tackle, that would be good info.
2. Tactics: Wade out? From a pier? Fly? Spinner? Bait?
3. Deep sea? Any good leads on a guide that won't make me sell my house to pay for the trip? I actually like going out with the locals to fish with line in hand for Red Snapper BTW.
4. Eating. I like to keep a few to feed the family. What species are good for eating and how do I cook them?

That's a lot of questions. Anyone who can answer them will be my best friend. Anyone who can answer them and be in Belize from July 16-23 will get (some) beer on my tab.

Hopefully someone will respond with better info than this but fishing along the Caribbean side of Placencia from shore wont be very good. You have about 20 ft of sand bottom then its all turtle grass in about 6 to 12 inches of water, the beach is very beautiful and if you could get out on a long dock things could be much better. Wading out could also be possible but Placencia is about 16 miles from the Barrier reef so you have waves and a bit of surf to deal with. Deep sea would be past the reff but plenty of ocean in front. The South end of the Village has a deep water channel but it is busy, I have snorkled it and never seen a fish, but night fishing could be good, just dont know. I would suggest getting a guide and a boat. Or staying on one of the Cayes for a few days of fishing. Most game fish are Barricuda, Tatrpin, Bonefish and Permit..snapper which I like the best because I just want good eating fish. Good Luck.
