We have been hearing that has been a problem with some gang members coming over from the mainland and breaking in and robbing. Anybody know about this? Any info would be appreciated. We always knew it was quite safe, but were wondering if this has been an issue.
Thanks Don & Sharon

We have had an increase in break in's.It is hard to say where the perps came from .We are diligently working to combat the problem.
You should have a heightened alertness, where are you staying?

Don and Sharon, if your here on vacation you won't notice a difference. If you live here for some time like myself you would notice that we have more crime than we did in the past but relatively speaking its still very low.
The mayor is talking about increasing the police force by 4 officers, smile for us that's a lot.

We've seen no increase in crime merely an increase in bookings and comments on how charming and delightful the island and its people are. An intial reply (since deleted) to Don & Sharons was pretty over the top doom & gloom. I thought it was unduly alarmist and painted a false picture.

I'll defer to Elberts assessment of the situation. On a recent sailing trip with some San Pedrano friends I happend to mention the "crime wave" and they looked at me like I'd walked into the room naked. "What are you talking about?" when I explained, they only laughed saying they certainly werent aware of a "massive crime wave". I think the board community becomes obsessed with certain topics at times and those obsessions can unduly influence people who dont otherwise have access to the facts or live here. Mea culpa et caveat reader.

Have you been broken into yet?

No, haven't been broken into. It is obviously a horrible experience and something I do not want to have to deal with. We do have a fence, have a dog and support the SACNW patrol. We have forged a relationship with our neighbours and keep a good eye on one another. Other vacant houses within close proximity of our home have not been broken into either.

It is a problem, for sure, and it is frustrating trying to combat the issue - but we are making headway and the more people that jump on board and work towards a positive solution the faster we will reach the goal of no more break-ins.

We have been broken into on SP,but all I need to do is read the local papers from our home in Illinois to see that crime on the island can still be considered relativily low compared to the gunplay we see happening in the USA daily. We were broken into after a guest of ours had his laptop out at the pool all day, some crimes on SP are still crimes of convienence so using your head really helps while on the island.
