In March just prior to the elections, we carried the story of a prime piece of property owned by Belize Water Services Limited in San Pedro that was cancelled and sold off to nineteen year old Alyssa Tun of Orange Walk Town. Tun paid two thousand five hundred dollars and thirty cents for a property with a market value as high as a quarter of million dollars, given its location on Laguna Drive in San Pedro Town.
We bring this up again because it may have been lost in the election campaign and because on Thursday the Deputy Prime Minister said that a house lot in San Pedro is valued at thousand dollars. He was likely referring to the fire sale of the BWSL property. The transaction was made on December fifteenth, 2011; the lot was processed and leased for purchase on the same day and paid for on January ninth, 2012.
In justifying the land amassed by his family, most of it crown land at prices extremely below market value, the DPM also said on Thursday, that his family was not normal, but hard working. We checked out Tun’s credentials, she is not exactly a member of the clan, but close enough. She is the niece of one of Vega’s henchmen in Orange Walk Town.
Back then, Minister Manuel Heredia was asked about the sale. He told the San Pedro Sun that; “People would normally ask me for a recommendation sometimes. I feel like it is a little shady as to what went on over there with that land because there is a recommendation letter regarding this person that I don’t even know.” The recommendation letter which Tun obtained was the proposed site for a new BWSL office.
