I am heading down there next week and, being that I constantly see the moniker "Mosquito Coast", I was wondering what the mosquito situation is a few miles North of San Pedro? Any advice on what products to use, tips, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Darren

We just got back yesterday and surprisingly they weren't as bad as I thought. We just carried the deep woods off with us mostly at dusk they were annoying.

I'll chime in with my own recommendation for 3M Ultrathon. Originally developed for the US military it's recently been made available to the public. 12hr slow release cream, low DEET content, and extremely effective. Tested...guess where? Belize! I'm walking bug candy and this stuff keeps me happy with only a light application once or twice a day.

Edit: Do NOT get the pump spray or the dab applicator. Go with the cream in tubes only

Mosquito Coast is the south end of the island.
It depends on how far north you are, how close to the sea, how much breeze you get and what time of day you are talking about. Has this confused you enough? LOL

In regards to the name "Mosquito Coast." Here on the island there is a section on the south end where the Movie, Mosquito Coast was filmed. It starred Harrison Ford and was all quite the buzz (pun intended) back in the day. THAT is why the are was dubbed mosquito coast, not because the bugs are any worse there than any other area.

But yes, we have bugs when it is buggy. And not when it is nice windy.

Be prepared and do your best to stay in during dawn and dusk - and stay out of bushy areas and places where there isn't a breeze. That should help.

The Belizean Mosquitos are nothing like the ones back in the states, different size and shape. The San Pedro Mosquitos are far worse. I think they are already sucking blood before their feet land on you. We were there last October and we couldn't out run them on the golf cart at night.

I have to say that we, 2 miles north of SP, were just commenting this morning that the mosquitos are just not a problem at the moment despite the rain - could be we are getting some good breezes, we stay most of the time on the front of the island and we are careful at dawn and dusk as has been suggested. Long may it last!!
