And if he's going to be Minister of "Peacing" - then will Darrell Bradley be the Mayor of Concreting?

In five months in office - his council has quietly paved close to twenty streets - most of them with concrete.

Today he explained that in advance of the launch of the Municipal Bond, he hopes to finish paving a few other much trafficked streets:

Darrell Bradley - Mayor, Belize City Council
"We've moved into Daily Street; we've already completed Daily Street. Now, we're on Craig Street, which comes from Daily Street unto Barrack; then we'll move on to Barrack Road. The BWS indicated to us that they will complete those works by next week Wednesday, and as soon as they finish, our contractor will go on that. They're also doing works along Hyde's Lane, and so Hyde's Lane will be cemented, and when they finish Barrack, we'll move on to Freetown Road. We'll then do Mapp Street, and Douglas Jone Street, and we'll then do North Front Street. The idea is that we want to do the whole downtown grade, so that when drivers drive in the downtown area, they get a perfect drive on fully cemented streets."

Jules Vasquez
"All this is happening without the revenue from the bond."

Darrell Bradley
"What we have done is that we have re-financed some of our existing facilities, on more favorable terms. And we've aggressively gone out to solicit support from the business community, and they have responded is droves. We got support from BTB, ICB - lots of members from the business community, Belize Bank - and so, the reason why we're doing this work in an aggressive fashion, is really to act as a marketing ploy for the bond, so that persons, when they buy into the bond, they can know that the monies will go to good use. They can can see what we can do when we come together as a community."

Jules Vasquez
"So, you're able to Freetown Road, North Front Street, Barrack Road, Daily Street, Hyde's Lane, and Craig Street all without revenue from the bond."

Darrell Bradley
"We are able to do all of the works with exception of Freetown Road. Freetown Road is a very costly street, and the projections are between $650,000 and $700,000, depending on how we do it, and depending on drainage works, and different things like that. So, we're able to do all the works including Cran Street, Hydes Lane, and Barrack with our internal funding."

Correction, Jules said "Superbond" - he should have said Municipal Bond - the two have no relation.

Craig street will cost eighty thousand dollars, Hyde's Lane ninety five thousand dollars, and Barrack Road, two hundred thousand dollars.

The list of the contracts, the wards and the bids will be published in the newspaper.

from a friend.....

I think that the current UDP mayor is doing a fantastic job of improving the streets. When I drive on portions of South Street, Orange Street, Queen Street, Hydes Lane etc. I wonder why previous mayors could not have done this during the last 30 years. Darrel Bradley has done more for Belize City Streets in 6 months than previous mayors did during their entire term(s).

On the flip side I have had many choice words for the mayor when I suffered inconveniences that were unnecessary. There seems to be no traffic planning and total confusion when streets are being repaired. Last week I drove around in a literal circle trying to get out of the Fort George area - all they had to do was to open up the short one way street from Lovers Point to Ebeneezer Church and traffic would have been able to flow smoothly - instead they posted traffic officers to ticket anyone who tried to go up the one way street.

Three weeks ago I silently cursed the authorities when driving on Hydes Lane - I almost had to lock my 4 wheel drive to negotiate the hills and craters left by utility companies - yesterday I praise them when drove on te recently completed street.

Ditto, he has come into office swinging and doing a good job since and looking good. If he keeps this up, could be a contender in next elections for udp and leapfrog some of the less capable and dishonest ministers currently in place. This guy is educated and has removed people from positions where they were stealing money or accepting bribes. So far, so good.

Mayor Says City Mass Paving Will Continue On Southside

And while there is now a free flow of traffic between Coney Drive and the Northern Highway - on the north side of Belize City - there is congestion all over.

That's because some very major streets are all under construction - all at once. That's Craig Street, Barrack Road, Freetown Road and contiguous streets.

It's a constant traffic headache - and that's because it hasn't come to the southside yet! But the mayor says, bear with it, it's all for the greater, long term good:..

Mayor Darrell Bradley
"Right now we are focusing on the north side down town grade and the contractors are almost completed on Barrack Road and then they will move on to Freetown Road. When they finish Freetown Road they are going to move on to Douglas Jones and Mapp Street and they finish that they will do North Front Street and New Road. We are also working on the south side down town area; all the streets off Albert - Bishop Street, South Street, all of those streets."

"The information we are getting though from BWS is that those installations are old and all of them need to be repaired. It's a lot of timing and its lot coordination and that's why it's difficult."

"It's going to be a huge bit of inconvenience but I would say that the inconvenience is necessary because at the end of the day people get to drive on a very nice street that will last about 40 years."

The Mayor says the paving paroxysms should be over by the end of November - that is assuming the bond floats.

So far the council has spent a little over 2 million dollars on paving streets - and has gotten about a third of that contributed by business houses.

A Street With Cars Named PUMA

And as you may have noticed, Mayor Bradley was speaking today at the opening of another street. Under his leadership, the council has paved 23 streets - and today PUMA street was declared open.

It is the namesake of PUMA Energy, which has taken charge of what was formerly the ESSO franchise in Belize.

The land that PUMA street spans was actually the property of the adjacent PUMA Ramon's Gas Station - which has been newly re-branded. PUMA agreed to assist the Council with the 40% of the cost for the concrete paving so that it could become a proper street.

Today the mayor said it is an important one as well:..

Mayor Darrell Bradley
"They contributed about 40% of the cost for constructing the street. The street cost us $41,000.00 and it was done by M&M Construction. The street was actually finished about 2-3 `weeks ago but Puma was not ready in terms of their re-branding exercise. So today we officially dedicated the street and it provides a major gateway from Coney drive for persons to access the Northern Highway in the morning so that they could go on to the Northern Highway. From a traffic management perspective it's a street that very necessary - there are couple other of the streets that we have chosen to do because of its importance to allow access to persons in the Coney Drive area to the Northern Highway."
