I have leased a place in San Pedro for 1 year. I don't intend to work, but will enjoy the island life and do some volunteering. I have never visited for more than 1 month. Will I need a special visa?
Thanks!

JaHo,

If you intend to volunteer, you might want to discuss getting a volunteer permit with the group you wish to volunteer with. Legally, you are not allowed to volunteer without a special work permit from immigration for this purpose. While this isn't necessarily strictly enforced, there have been cases when it has been and it would be wise to do some research as you wouldn't want a nasty surprise visit from immigration and the threat of deportation. Otherwise, you can stay and continue to update your tourist visa every 30 days.

Thanks for that info. I never would have thought I needed a permit to volunteer! Good to know...

Often you can get the organization that you are volunteering for to write a note in support. But as Colly said, it can be a bit unpredicable. There are many very satisfying opportunties to get involved. Take the time to settle in and feel your way around.

My husband and I are moving down in October to start our retirement and reading this question brings up a good question. I know where the office is to get our visas but can you explain the process, cost for the two of us, and how soon once we have arrived do we need to apply?

Go to office n the 29th day after your arrival and pay them 50BZe and they will renew your visa stamp. You get a 30 day stamp on arrival. Do not go over 30 days as they can get very testy. If your 30th day is on a weekend go before and not after. they also only give 30 days from the day you go in so will not add extra if you go in early.
