If you passed by University Drive this evening, you probably experienced a slight delay in the movement of traffic in the evening rush hour.
That was because a small contingent from the student body of the University of Belize was staging a peaceful demonstration.
7News stopped in to see what the excitement was about, and the president of the Belize City student government told us that the Administration isn't dealing with their concerns in a timely manner.
Here's how she described it:
Cordelia Belizaire, President - UB Student Government Belize City
"We have been having some concerns over the past couple months in which we had follow up with administration but nothing was being accomplished so they weren't really doing anything and we are already almost a month in and nothing is being accomplished."
"What are some of the problems?"
"Some of the problems that we are currently having is that the pot holes for once, when entering the campus, there are a lot of holes and this causes problems and it damage people's vehicle. In addition when you walk you can hurt your foot. When it rains the campus is filled with a lot of water and mud."
"We are not talking about the education campus?"
"It is the education campus - this is the campus where a lot of teachers are trying to forward their education and they are encourage at their school to create and enabling environment but when they attend those school they are not being provide with such an environment and the water that we have settling around campus because of the over grow lawns, the mosquitos are manifesting in our classes and its really becoming a problem for the students and this is not an overnight thing - it's something that has been prolonging far too long."
"Can you tell us about other problems that you wanted address and that were being ignored?"
"Other problems that we wanted address were for them to have the lawns cut regularly. The windows to be fix and the classrooms to be painted. The blackboard - some of them needed to be changed, but I can say as of current they have been taking those steps to do what is necessary in order to get the classrooms up to par, so they had been painting and stuff but it has been done slowly."
"What would you say to some who say that this is a minor issue, we have other issues pending."
"There are a lot of issues pending. Yes I do agree with that. However you must remember that in order for learning to take place you need an enabling environment; you need somewhere you can feel comfortable. After a long day at work for example when we come we do even have somewhere to grab a quick snack."
According to the president, Administration of the school has made small attempts to address some of their issues, but they want the process to move forward at a quicker pace.
