If you can believe the press releases and promoters, Belize soon will be literally awash in new marinas:

  • 250-slip marina opening this month at Sanctuary Belize
  • 263-slip marina for "superyachts" at The Placencia, opening by mid-2013 according to developer news releases
  • 60-slip marina planned at Dreamscapes, opening date unstated
  • Mayan Islands on a caye on the back side of Ambergris originally claimed it would open a 400-slip "mega-yacht" marina, but those plans are in limbo ... or is it gumbo-limbo?
  • Punta Alegre (of which Orchid Bay is part) in Corozal District says it plans a marina -- size or future opening date not stated
  • a proposed marina at Cerros Sands on the Cerros peninsula
  • an addition to the marina at Sittee River.

I'm not sure where all the boats are going to come from to fill those marinas, but what do I know?

And, again if you can believe the developers and friends, sales are going great at these developments:

  • Dreamscapes claims to have sold "more than 300 lots" to date
  • Phase 1 of Sanctuary Belize is sold out and Phase 2 is almost sold out, according to statements by developers, and according to Live and Invest Overseas newsletter 11 Sanctuary buyers "have already built homes, and 14 others are in the process of building. The developer expects another 45 owners to begin construction within the next six months"
  • 40% of homesites at Orchid Bay in Corozal District have been sold, according to real estate newsletters

Behind Ambergris Caye yachts are constricted by draft maximum of 4 ft. High tide. Lots of shallow spots and channels no deeper than that and lot of area which is shallow. LIMESTONE shelf and caves below the hard cover. Most yachts would need 6 to 8 feet or even more. Not going to be possible to put mega yachts there.

Ray's comment is an understatement. There is a channel for barges to come to the island port, but after that even skiffs need to be cautious about running aground.

Will leave others to comment on the claims elsewhere - Simon, you know about boats, waters and travel of this sort - what say you?

from Mary Toy.....

Don't forget dredging - the Department of Geology never met a dredger they didn't like. And, the more dredging, the more sand to sell - so with one dredged channel, you kill several birds with one stone - a new marina AND sand to sell and . . .. . A win/win situation for everybody - except the marine environment.

question asked of Mary: are they selling dredged sand in Placencia too?

response: Only on a steady basis for about 8 years now.

I've seen the construction of the marina at Placencia. It looks interesting and may attract some transient traffic.Over the years I have owned several 75'+ boats,as has been said by others,no Captain/Owner would risk operating such a vessel anywhere near AC...
