Use common sense, like you've been told when growing up "don't talk to strangers and beware of your surroundings". Yes, the island has become more dangerous, I don't care what the people are saying. I think you can make up your own mind after reading what the blog and newspapers say. But then again, it is Belize after all, that is what I keep hearing, same excuse, different day.
I appreciate the feedback and the fact the post was allowed to remain on this board. It isn't a secret that my first trip to the island in 2000 was less crowded, more laid back and I could walk the beach home the approximately .3 miles at night. After the mugging attempt, I get a ride with a friend, rent a cart or take a taxi. I'm seldom alone on my trips down now so I feel a little safer but the story about a couple being mugged made me think things are getting more desperate. I still want to retire on San Pedro, I've just been questioning the decision of late.
I'm concerned with the escalation in the frequency and violence of attacks. It could be I'm just paying more attention to the local news sources or it could be a real trend. I was curious to know which.
