Looking for someone with experience going through the Qualified Retired Persons Incentive Program. I am considering doing this and it looks good on paper but I'm sure there has to be a down side. If anyone could tell me what they know, it would certainly help me work things out. Thanks

One possible downside is that you must requalify each year - but that won't be too hard if you keep your paperwork organized.

There is more info on the Belize Forum. Some complained about being limited on certain items imported duty free - like one bed for a couple. If you ever want to change to permanent residency you are taxed/charged the duty that you would have had to pay on everything, including vehicle...and not at a depreciated rate. I also think they said you can never get a work permit. My guess is they have covered all the bases so you can't circumvent certain fees.

I came in on the QRP and the only complaint I have is that after I was here two years they changed it from resident to temporary resident.
Minister Heredia says they are working on changing the rules for converting to citizen.

My wife and I have been on the QRP for about 8 years now.

We spend 4-5 months a year at our house on AC and the system works very well for us (we are British so the residency for tax purposes works particularly well for us).

We have found the process of renewing each year rather easy, especially now there in a BTB office in San Pedro. We just turn up there with passports, proof of presence for more than a month and proof of money transferred to Belize and then a few weeks later we get our new cards. It is as well to allow several weeks for the new cards to be ready.

Newbie here....

Hi, My name is Donna & my husband & I are planning to retire to Belize August. 2014. We will be in Belize July 2013 for a month and my question is do we apply for the QRP once we move there in 2014 or must we apply before leaving Canada? After reading this question it may sound silly to some but I am really not sure so any assistance & advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Contact Sharon Hiebing at WealthShips and Red Roof Property Management in Cayo. I think she's on this board, if not, she's on the BelizeForum.com site. Her business is as a relocation specialist. She has a great, informative blog. She will tell you everything you need to know. Or, do a search on this site. It has been discussed in great detail.

I would get the process underway before you come down because you will need certain documents from your existing doctor and police as part of the application process.

I suggest you get in touch with the BTB direct who, in my experience, are helpful. Establish an email link with them and you can move forward. We got our QRP without having to use any local adviser, albeit this was some 8 years ago but I doubt it has got more difficult since then and may in fact have got easier. The person to contact is, I beleive, Roshel at [email protected]
