Here is a video for all of those that wonder what it looks like directly under Caye Caulker

Mid December 2012 Chip Peterson of Belize Diving Services put together an expedition to re-introduce the cave diving world to Giant Cave. First explored by Paul Heinerth in the late 1970's and made famous in Sheck Exley's book Caverns Measureless To Man. The 4 day expedition succeeded in re-surveying approx. 3000 feet of old guidelines in the cave and cleaning up some old existing line traps.

The cave has a grim history on the island, lots of deaths!
Lots of bad memories for the locals that lost father, uncle, brother, husband and friends.
Do we want a map of the where the entrance is and broadcast it is open again posted on the board?
In Florida trained cave divers put a sign up at the underwater entrance to a particularly dangerous cave that said 'Go no farther ,prevent your own death... people still swam around the sign and died. What can I say other than its the nature of some people. Later the owner of the land put iron bars so no one could go in and that stopped people from dying in the cave. I'm speculating that if the bars were removed people would start dying in the cave again.

Later.... It will probably just increase the intrigue trying to keep it hush hush so lets put it back up.

I have tech diving friends, seriously experienced, would they be able to organize dives for themselves into this cave system? They too would cleanup old lines. TIA

The roof of this cave is 24" below my property.
I asked a local dive-master who'd been in there if it was worth the effort.
He told me visibility very poor, water is stagnant and bubbles coming up from bottom knock organic matter off roof, making it murky all the time.

I think Sharks Cave in between SWC and Tobacco Caye is the safest cave to dive with proper certification that is offered to visitors in Belize. I loved it

Sheck Exley is dead and died in a cave at age 45. If you read the preface of these cave diving books you'll notice most are mentioned in past tense.
David Shaw died trying to recover the body of Deon Dreyer
Paul Heinerth is still alive and you can read here about his recovering dead divers from caves for the family. http://www.sptimes.com/2004/06/16/Hernando/Lost_diver_found_in_i.shtml
Recreational Diving is a fun and safe sport, one of the biggest things I like about it is if any or all things go wrong I just say to myself 'Rats! I have to come up now' and not 'Aw [#%!] I'm dead!'
