And the crazy violence continued in the city this afternoon when a pair of men tried to rob the Belize Tourism Board.
Now, it's not the kind of place that would seem to suggest having a lot of cash at hand - but there is a cashier at the front desk who collects hotel Tax receipts - which we presume are usually paid by checque. More than that, the BTB is the headquarters of the Tourism Police Unit.

Nonetheless, a pair of daring men, one with a gun, and the other with a knife, popped inside the office this afternoon at 4:30. They reportedly put the gun through the service window and held it to the cashier's head and told her that it's a hold up. The security guard was sitting in a booth in the same room and set off the alarm. He confronted the men, who then dashed out. But the security guard fired at one of them and hit him in the foot. He fell on South Street about 100 feet from the BTB's door.

Tourism police picked him up and placed him into the back of the police pickup. He has been taken to the hospital - and is being held pending charges. According to our reports, he is CLARENCE LAMB from the nearby Jump Street area.

Another man escaped down Regent Street - and reports are that there may have been a boat waiting at the Foreshore. So far we have been unable to determine if any money was stolen.

Tourism Director Laura Esquivel told us she had no comment until police finish their investigation.

Robbery foiled; gunman at B.T.B. shot

Crime and violence dominated the headlines in 2012; and if you expect that to change, well more of the same is ushering in 2013. On New Yearís Day alone, there was a murder on West canal, a shooting in downtown Belize City, a woman was stabbed in San Ignacio, a man was chopped multiple times in Biscayne and this afternoon, a robber was shot in a botched robbery attempt at the Belize Tourism Board. That robber is tonight hospitalized under heavy police guard after the foiled robbery at the B.T.B.ís main office on Regent Street. It was a daring stab at holding up a relatively secure facility, which resulted in multiple shots being fired.

B.T.B. will be providing official comments at the completion of the investigation, but according to security personnel, a trio of men approached the building around four-thirty p.m. One of them proceeded to enter the premises, where he allegedly held up the cashier at gunpoint. His accomplices presumably remained outside as lookouts. Upon exiting the office, the gun-toting robber came into contact with the security team which opened fire on him while he attempted to flee towards Southern Foreshore. His accomplices, on the other hand, managed to make good their escape.

Immediately following the incident police and B.D.F. personnel swarmed the area in search of the duo. At news time, there is no word on whether the accomplices have been detained.

Police Recover Cash From BTB Robbery; Suspect Awaits Charges

Last night we told you about the drama at the BTB headquarters. At about 4:30, two men - one armed with a knife - the other with a gun - went into the office and held up the cashier. Police today confirmed that they did grab the cash pan with $1,732.00 dollars before they dashed out. But the security guard was on hand and he shot one of them.

That man is Clarence Lamb from the nearby Jump Street area where he is known as "Monkey Man." Yesterday when we arrived on the scene he was slumped on the ground - after he was shot in the calf with the Security's issued.38 pistol.

The other robber escaped, but not with the money. Police searched the area and recovered two cash pans, one which contained $300.00 dollars in cash and the other which contained $1,432.78 in cash - which is the sum total of what had been stolen.

Lamb has been hospitalized and he is expected to be charged as soon as he is well enough to appear in court. His accomplice is still at large.
