Just saw a documentary called "Last Chance to see Castro's Cuba". Laws are changing there very quickly with regard to allowing entrepeneurship and a middle class is emerging. The genie's out of the bottle and capitalism will triumph again. Soon enough the people will be demanding more rights and democracy.

I hope to Seashell and frankly before capitalism and democracy get too much of a chance to influence what's there. I think a lot of people tend to think that C&D is the cats meow for a culture that has developed something unique and wonderful in ways not associated with politics and merchandizing.

Based on what discussions I've had on the topic with Cubanos here in Belize and expats in the States, there is a strong sentiment about protecting the social fabric and culture that has grown there. Their opinions had nothing to do with politics; their concern was for the society in general.Sure they'd like to see an increase in their GDP and commonwealth but not at the cost of losing what has grown there.

What do you think of their concerns and the argument for very careful exposure?

You'd better hurry up Bear. In the meantime I think that they will be able to hold onto their particularly Caribbean culture, as well as any other island/society that size. Even the young people that I met that were willing to be frank with me, said they love their island and if they were able to get away from it now, they'd still want to eventually return and finish up the balance of their life in Cuba.

Some day Havana will be all prettied up, and while that will make the city quite lovely to behold, she is still quite something to see in her faded beauty.
