The U.S. and Britain signed the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty in 1850. Article 1 of the Treaty agreed that the two countries would not “fortify, or colonize, or assume, or exercise any dominion over Nicaragua, Costa Rica, the Mosquito Coast, or any part of Central America”.
