This has been going on forever, and will probably go on for ever. Nothing new.

A court in Miami gave BTL to a crooked investor for free because of a serious dumb contract signed by Fonseca in a PUP gov.
The UDPs Barrow refused to even go to that US court session. They ordered PM Barrow to show while imposing a $50,000/day fine on Belize for defying them.
The Prime Minister famously explained to the US 1st Curcuit Court that this was Belize and only Belize Law applies here.
And that they could go &$)() themselves..

Now he is Prime Minister again. Is he going to hand over half of Belize because of foreign court judgement?
Ain't it great having your own sovereign country and only obeying laws you wrote yourself?

So then what is the meaning of sovereignty, if not to ignore other self-interested countries decrees?
Educate me, what would PM Barrow have to gain by ceding Belize?
Seems like just more political sabre-rattling, based on an ancient royal grant.
If the UK demanded Belize, or the US for that matter to return to Royal Colonial status, how far do you think they'd get?

What is new is the referendum to bring the long standing issue to an international court for a binding decision. I suspect the GOB believes the decision would be in their favor?

Pleased to see this discussion percolating amongst voters. Its not an easy yes or no and requires you read up on the history of the claim and all parties involved. Neither political party has taken a firm stand, although some reps in both parties have voiced their personal views. The Belize Referendum Committee will travel throughout Belize holding public information hearings, so you will have plenty of opportunities between now and the proposed vote in Oct to learn more and form an opinion.

Can anyone name a country that took a territory without any trouble?
Argentina wanted the Falkland Islands 1100 solders died.
Israel occupied the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, (thatís going well!)
Democratic People's Republic of Korea - Republic of Korea 184,000 recorded deaths.
Vietnam , Somalia, Cyprus, and OMG lets not forget Poland, they have been tossed around more than any country on the globe, with deaths in the millions.
I canít imagine why we might be concerned with Guatemala taking us over with its history of death squads, assassinations and genocide.
Lets worry about a little thing like whoís gona get Caye Caulker.

The island of Manhattan was purchased for the sum of $24 from the american indians who viewed it as valueless.....but seriously....who indicated this initiative was limited to CC?

Not used to elberts style of humor Mike?
Guatemala actually brought troops to the border to attack us in my memory. An earthquake derailed that.
The Brits also offered to blow the Guats to heck of they crossed the border.
And the US who pays for much of the Guat Army remarked that they would cut off hundreds of millions in military aid.
Nice to have big mean colonial powers still helping you out as in the Falklands incident in Argentina.
Guatemala really would like a passage to the Caibbean that doesn't require going through the Panama Canal. They hope one of these old pieces of paper can be swapped for that.

I have recently driven the roads in Guatemala. Give it to them long enough to do the roads...
