Hey everyone,

My wife and I are planning on moving to Caye Caulker (a place we have been to many times) and have a couple of questions.

1: Can someone perhaps tell us what kind of monthly utilities cost we could image (water and power)?

2: Internet is vital for us to work, can someone tell us the cost of internet per month and what type of speed we can expect?

3: Last is cost of cable.

Thanks in advance for taking time to let us know.

Ours ran BZ$85 for electric and $90 for water.
We don't use air.
Internet comes in different prices we ran the slowest for $100. Not good for streaming films at any price speed available.
Cable was BZ$35 includes HBO etc.

Thanks Dane for the quick reply. We are Gringo's so I think we will end up using the air conditioning at least at night.

When you say there is no speed of internet that will download movies, what about commercial speed?

90% of the gringos skip the air in favor of fans. Much depends on the design of your home. Ours needed the our air about ten nights a year mostly in aug sept..
It makes life much less comfy if you have air on at home all the time and go out in the warm air outside.
Your electric bill will more than double. The rate is more than double the average in the US. Only Hawaii costs as much.
In our rental we put air we brought in a suitcase. It was a very efficient window unit that cost $150 in the states.
Local guys install a expensive two part unit that costs more to operate, without any other benefits. It is all they know.
They aren't up to date on efficiency like in the States.

We got so used to cheap life I forgot the high dollar plans you can stream with.
They weren't even on our radar.
By the way the custom is to speak in BZ$ unless it is stated as US. You should insist on that when you live here. Many other uses are attempts to mislead you on money issues, because of the word "dollar"

Last summer BTL dropped prices and increased speed. 1MB which allows for streaming, is BZ $140.
