On April 12th, the Caye Caulker Village Council along with Hon. Manuel Heredia and the Lands Department held a gathering at the Community Center. It wasn't any regular gathering but rather a long awaited special occasion. Those who were invited included youths and long standing residents of Caye Caulker, who were blessed with the opportunity to finally own a piece of land. Every one present was selected via a recommendation by the members of the Council and Lands Committee of Caye Caulker. There was about 200 residents present and every one walked away with their own piece of Caye Caulker.

It is claimed that the lands given were the last available lots that were found after many research. It is also claimed that this gesture has nothing to do with the upcoming Village Council elections which is scheduled for June 16th 2013.

Was the sharing of the land fairly done?

Since the lands were shared with the people of Caye Caulker or so we are made to believe, there have been quite a few rumors circling around that a number of people who were recommended were not qualified or better yet, not even residents of the island. It was also rumored that to be qualified for a piece of lot you are to be a resident of the island for at least 5 to 10 years. One thing is for sure that you are not suppose to own any land but there have been a few people who already own a piece of property, was still put on the list and still got their piece of the pie as well as non residents of the island. Will the residents of the island ever be granted the wish to see the list of who all were lucky to get and if it is not confidential why hide it??

A list of names which seems to be the preliminary list has been obtained and these are just some of the names from the 150 or so recommended names. Please note these are not the final list of the people who got property.

In an interesting twist just before the upcoming Village Council elections which is now due on June 16th 2013, the Treasurer of the CCVC, Mr. Miguel Neal has handed in his resignation with effect from Jan 11, 2013. The Chronicles has obtained a copy of the letter which states his reasons.

I would like to know which of these individuals meet the requirements of residence for 5-10 years and do not currently own land?

If they would use 'sort' and alphabetize this list I think they will see that some people are listed twice.

I recognize many names on this list and it looks like wealth of family, persons were not considered, more than a few of the more wealthy islanders on the list. Some when I read thier names I was verbably excited for, hard working honest young adults, so I am glad some were included, I hope they get the land.

Isn't Christian August, Maria's son that always had a food cart and used to braid hair? I should know several children around his age, but I have forgotten their names. He had a little sister I believe.

Maria used to live not far back up from the split (back when it was Patti's at the Split) over on the West side.
