from Omar Arceo:

The fish you see illegally filleted here is known as an endangered species and a majestic fish: The Permit. I have dedicated my career as a fly fisherman to protect and RESPECT the habitat and the lives of these fish. So you can imagine how I felt when my ANGLER stumbled upon this ILLEGAL activity! This is a complete DISRESPECT of the Fisheries Laws in Belize. We are the only country that protect this fish and yet we have among us sport/commercial men that REFUSE to understand that this is a CATCH AND RELEASE fish! Just like the BONE FISH and TARPON! I am outraged!

This permit was found near beach traps on the west side of Ambergris Caye, Sunset Cove. Shame on all of the beach trap owners that do not RESPECT the that this is an endangered specie! All for the LITTLE money we lose these creatures that are such an important part of our eco-tourism here in Belize! Shame on them! If someone sellign filleted permit or shredded bone fish, DO NO BUY. Report it to the authorities! PROTECT and RESPECT OUR FISH and OUR FLATS!

My friend also made reports of being offered permit (to buy and eat) out at Turneffe atoll.
