The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Belize and Guatemala, Wilfred Elrington and Luis Fernando Carrera, met yesterday with the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Josť Miguel Insulza, to analyze the situation of the process to submit their dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Both Ministers agreed on the firm will of their countries in maintaining the Special Agreement to submit the Guatemalan claim to the ICJ and, in that sense, they agreed that the Deputy Ministers should meet, within the framework of the High-level Working Group, and as soon as possible, to reinforce the confidence-building measures guiding this process.

The Ministers also agreed that once progress is made in the process, they will meet again to set the date for the holding of the referenda.

Both Ministers expressed their appreciation to the OAS and to the Secretary General for their constructive participation in this process, as well as to the international community for its support throughout the years, stressing their hope that they will continue to receive that fundamental support to maintain peace and stability between the two countries.

We should purge our government on anyone entertaining the idea of Guatemala acquiring any of Belize territory. Wilfred Elrington should be the first on the list.

We have 400+ islands. Not that I think Belize should give up a single inch but I believe Guatemala wants the Sapodilla's, Seal Caye (which they already occupy illegally) up to and including Ranguana. That would include Sapodilla, Lime, Hunting, Seal (3 (1 awash and one sandbar above water)), Nicholas, Frank's (and East), Northeast Sapodilla, Tom Owen's (East and West), Ranguana.

No Belizean I know would give up an inch but they were only a 150K 15 years ago and are now are 300K+ which is more due to immigration rather than natural population growth. According to the media many of the immigrants have been given voting rights over the last 15 years.

There are those in Belize who will benefit greatly financially if Guatemala took over (big land owners). The overwhelming force of the Guatemala military would quash any resistance quickly and life would return to normal fairly quickly but the long term social and cultural changes would be enormous, some good some bad.

Only my opinion but I think it's a fairly accurate assessment.

Belize is a sovereign nation and should remain that way and should be supported by Guatemala rather than bullied. We have lots to offer them and they have lots to offer us.
