Hi My name is Don. I am permanently moving to Stann Creek soon. I love to cook. And yes, I use plenty of spices/herbs that I grow for the most part. Is there any hard to get spices in the land of plenty? I'll bring seeds and grow in my garden if necessary. Thanks, Don

Your seeds will have to be brought in using BAHA guidelines, fyi. Check their website to be sure you are compliant. There is a Spice Farm in either Stann Creek or Toledo. You will find lots of useful information on "Belize Organic Smallholders" on Facebook.

Go over on the Belize forums site and there is a member there who is a terrific chef named Alaskatony who runs a restaurant in Hopkins area. He is a great source of info you may need. Availability on Ambergris and the rest of Belize can vary greatly.

I've never had any problems or had to check with BAHA bringing in seeds that are in their original commercial seed packs. The challenge is to get what is brought to grow in the sub tropics and sea side. Many "European" herbs have a difficult time here. I suggest bringing a few varieties of each (I have 13 basil types, small leaf Asian varieties do well for me) and see what works best in your location. Get open pollinated or heirloom so you can save the best ones the seeds from season to season. Talk to your neighbors when you arrive and see what is growing in their yards. Experiment with some local spices you may not be familiar with.
That said I always stock up on various spices when visiting the states. Tight sealing glass jars are essential if you wish to keep them fresh in this heat and humidity.

MisterB266 - lots of Turmeric available at the San Ignacio market. It is sold as yellow ginger.
