Person hauling the nurse shark was not the fisher - just given the head section to cart away.

A large mature nurse shark - a protected species in Belize since July 2011 - was hooked, hauled onto the beach, stabbed in the head and eventually killed between RAmon's and BC's bar and the BElize Yacht Club on SAturday evening around 5-5:30. The hauler is apparently not the fisher who made off with the tail section. If anyone has information on this nurse shark death, please call it in to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve Office 226-2247. Nurse sharks are protected and represent a major attraction for 1000s of tourists and the livelihood of over 100 guides in the area.

I've never seen anything more disgusting. The guy carrying it around like a trophy with blood all over him is as ugly as it gets. Surprised that this thread has not received more posts.

Given the fact that a couple of weeks ago it was a crocodile that was tortured and god knows what all, then the pool monkey was rescued that had been half starved and chained up, and now this nurse shark is mutilated - I'd say that a serious education campaign needs to be initiated to educate every single person on the island about which animals are protected and what can happen to them if they break the law. At the same time you might try teaching compassion and genuine concern - if that's possible - to the local Belizeans, because that is the source of all of these horrible things being done to wildlife. The majority of the local Belizeans don't read these boards; they don't know that it is not okay to do this. For years they have been able to make money and/or feed their family by taking some of the animals for food. They don't know that it is not okay to capture Iguanas. It is purely lack of education and lack of compassion and empathy. It needs to be taught in schools and, in turn, the children should educate their parents. Have open houses at school and other special educational events for everyone. This is horrific and education is a must.

There probably haven't been more comments because the story was covered back on April 1. Many of us have seen the original story.
