I live around the 3.5 mile post in Boca Ciega. Every year, the last week of May, there is a massive "migration" of blue land crabs for about 3 days. Just wondering if anyone knows the reason for this. Is it an actual migration to the northern end of Ambergris? Maybe something to do with breeding?
It's really quite a thrill to watch, the shore birds have a feast, and my cat is mesmerized!

Sometimes I think the explanation for everything that makes you scratch your head and go hua is reproduction. The Blue Land Crabs come to the front of the island as part of their reproduction cycle. I think they need the salt water for their young to grow in. The rainy season seams to trigger the start of them traveling from lagoon side to beach side. One of my neighborhoods considers it soup festival time.
More and more I'm convinced that on Earth only two things are happening, Survive and reproduce the gene, and survive might just be to reproduce so we might say only one theme.

Are these good to eat? What's the difference in the blue ones and the red ones. What about white? Can they be trapped?
My yard is now riddled with holes and my breeze-way is a living moving mass at night.

Land crabs taste good, but because they are scavengers, catch and feed them bread for a few days so whatever they scavanged to eat before you caught them, passes thru their digestive system.
