Since early 2001, the San Pedro Police Force has been denouncing the lack of proper living conditions at their barracks. The lack of proper infrastructure, plumbing and wiring has led to officers having to live in less than ideal conditions. Although this is a widely discussed topic that has been brought to the attention of the Ministry by every Chief of Police since, no assistance has been given to improve the living conditions of the officers who serve our community.

Now improvements are finally being made as Coastal Executive Officer in charge Luis Castellanos has taken action. On Friday, May 31st, demolition of the dilapidated barracks located behind the police station commenced. Castellanos could not bear to have his officers living in the conditions the barracks offered, and as such had temporarily relocated the officers. “Upon taking over command as the Coastal Executive Officer on the 14th January 2013, and upon checking the living quarters provided for the Police Officers stationed here in San Pedro Town and Caye Caulker Village, immediately my heart fell. However, I was motivated to alleviate, at all costs, the living conditions for these hard working officers,” stated Castellanos.

Given the need for proper housing, Castellanos proceeded to contact a couple of island businesses for support. Gricel Graniel from Matachica Resort, Mukul Kanabar from Phoenix Resort, Brent Kirkman from Victoria’s House Resort and David Hess from Las Terrazas Resort pledged a total of $20,000BZ towards the construction of a temporary unit. The proposal is to construct a two story wooden building that will house eight officers. The construction of the building, behind the San Pedro Police Station, is being overseen by Councilor Gabriel “Gaby” Nuñez (contractor by profession).

Police Barracks Update – Donations Needed!

The much needed Police Barracks is finally becoming a reality thanks to several donors who teamed up to give the first monies towards this much needed project. Construction on the two storey building has commenced and it will have eight rooms, each with its own bathroom. In addition, each room will have a small balcony.

To date the group has contributed $20,000 to the new barracks. They currently have $15,502.35 in the bank. This amount is not sufficient to complete the project, so money needs to be raised. If you are interested in contributing, kindly email Mukul Kanabar at mukul@thephoenixbelize.com.

Completion of Police Barracks delayed

In an effort to improve the dilapidated barracks in which San Pedro police officers had to reside, Coastal Executive Officer in Charge Luis Castellanos, with the assistance of the San Pedro business community and the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) begun the construction of a new barracks to upgrade the living conditions of the town’s officers. According to the project plans, the two story structure will have eight rooms, each equipped with a private bathroom and mini balcony. Demolition of the old barracks and construction of the new wooden building commenced on Friday, May 3rd, but today construction has stopped due to many reasons but will resume in the coming weeks.

In an interview with The San Pedro Sun, Castellanos stated that construction was delayed due to several reasons, but that it will resume in the coming weeks. Contractor Nuñez is volunteering his time and workers to construct the barracks and as such, has to manage time with his other commitments. “Gaby was kind enough to construct the barracks for us free of charge, but he also has other contracts to complete. And it is completely understandable that we have to work out a way to get all things done,” said Castellanos. September was also a busy month, and coupled with heavy rains, no construction work could be done.

However, the biggest issue affecting construction is lack of funds. Even though San Pedro Business community assisted greatly, Central Government has not offered assistance. Without the proper funding, the project cannot be completed. “For now the construction will continue only till the point where the funds we have allow us. We cannot complete the project without additional funds. We have petitioned the Government of Belize to assist us in remedying the living conditions of my officers, but they have still not given us any monetary help,” said Castellanos. “We will continue to ask the San Pedro community for assistance to finish the temporary barracks.”

We are VERY excited to announce that building a fire under something CAN make a difference! The San Pedro Sun is working with Elito Arceo in relocating two buildings that were once used to house the Coast Guard here on the island, that can now be used as police barracks. Elito is organizing the equipment and man power to move the houses to the lot behind the police station as soon as THIS SUNDAY and we, as a community need to help! Once the houses are situated they will need painted, inside and out and they will need to be completely furnished. We also need to raise funds for the moving expenses and we need to build bathrooms for each house. We ALSO need to raise funds to finish the other barracks which are currently under construction. Once this is done we can accommodate approximately 12 officers. If you have spare furniture, household and kitchen items or gently used appliances please consider donating them. We will also be organizing some fund raising events . A complete story and more information will be published in The San Pedro Sun this Thursday. If we want the police to take care of us then we need to take care of them!

Important story....

San Pedro rallies to provide better housing for island police officers

In an additional effort to alleviate the housing problem Elito Arceo and community members will be transporting two homes to the property behind the police station on Sunday, March 23rd. The homes have been donated to the San Pedro police department by the Belize Coast Guard, who initially received them from the San Pedro Business Association. Once the houses have been installed, repairs will be made to make for comfortable living quarters and a community work-a-thon to complete the homes is in the plans for the near future. In addition, Arceo will be spearheading the construction of bathrooms to compliment the new homes. The San Pedro Sun editor Tamara Sniffin commented, “We need to take care of the ones we depend on to protect us, and now we have a willing group of community members who will be embarking on a project to assist the police with new and proper living conditions. We are appealing to the entire community to join us in supporting this very important effort.”
