Concerns are being raised over public and private space in Punta Gorda; Correspondent Paul Mahung has the details.

PAUL MAHUNG

"Growing concerns have been expressed about a newly constructed wharf spanning off coastline at the Northern entrance to Punta Gorda. The newly completed wharf is located in Cattle Landing Village about a mile at the Northern Entrance to Punta Gorda. Along with growing concerns expressed publicly the main issue seems to narrow in on concern about a PRIVATE sign placed at the entrance of the wharf. The concern was also brought up at Tuesday's night Coastal Zone management plan consultation meeting in town and again at last night's Punta Gorda Town Council open meeting. The owners of the wharf are Cattle Landing residents Rosita and Oliver Williams Jr. Love News caught up with Rosita Williams who is the newly Independent elected Chairlady of Cattle Landing Village. Related to the PRIVATE sign and construction of the wharf, Mrs. Williams emphasized that her family has done everything possible within the laws of Belize to make the wharf project a reality and would appreciate any further public concerns be clarified with her or any other member of her family. Reporting for Love News Paul Mahung Punta Gorda."

This is a major concern on Caye Caulker.
I'm not sure of anything in Belize anymore.
I've been told that all seashore is GOB land, supposed to be 66' everywhere.
Obviously beach erosion has caused some problems there.
What's more of a problem is "Private Dock" signs, even gates blocking docks everywhere.
The story goes if you have land abutting seashore you can apply for management and build a dock.
But this dock is open to public and officially belongs to GOB, you just get to maintain and use it.
This privatization of public property is not good for the community.
Locals need to fish, and tourists like to look beyond the 6 inches of water you see from the shore.
