And while Belize has its own Reina for the next year, we might also be having our own race-track. It may sound far fetched, but the Belize Automobile Club has linked up with FIA, the international federation of automobiles. That's the governing body for motorsports worldwide, in charge of such prestigious association as Formula One and NASCAR.

FIA's Technical and Sporting manager for the America's, Fernando Gutierrez-benjumea is in Belize laying the ground for a visit by Jean Todt FIA's President who is coming next week.

Rhon Leckey of the Belize Automobile Club told us how things are shaping up...

I've attended F1 races all over the world. To call this a "pipe dream" is an insult to "pipe dreams" everywhere...

True, but a pro level cart track would be awesome.

Agreed but well out of the specter of possibility for a government that can't even finish an basic sports complex...
PS I'd be in for a shifter cart track.

The Future Of Car Racing In Belize Begins With Lessons On Safety

Ten days ago we told you about the FIA, the International Federation of Automobiles, which is the governing body for motorsport worldwide - kinda like FIFA for car-racing. Through the Belize Automotive Club they've taken an interest in Belize - and on Saturday, their president who is on a regional tour visited Belize. He held a press conference on Saturday at the Radisson and said that Belize must first take baby steps:.

Jean Todt, FIA President
"What we want in a small country like Belize is to participate in better education to the development of motor sport at the grassroots level. As I mentioned earlier we should not speak at the moment to have wrong ambitions but you have to start first by educating the champion - so we are at the level of educating Belize to go in Motor Sport."

Hon. Herman Longsworth, Min. Of State, Min of Sports
"Too often we aim in sports to achieve at the highest levels without first developing the bottom levels. Don't expect that you will have big car races in Belize anytime soon but we will be teaching people to drive properly, they will be teaching people to drive properly and to be responsible on the roads and we can't loose from that - we can only benefit. "

FIA governs Formula, NASCAR and all levels of racing from grassroots to elite. For context, Barbados is host to a rally under FIA auspices.
