Have there been any reported Dengue Fever cases on Ambergris Caye this year?

Since nobody seems inclined to talk about it. I will. I just met another ex-pat with a confirmed case of Dengue Fever. She has not been off the Island in months, she got it here. The new owner of AJ's is in the US being treated for a case of Dengue but I do not know if he traveled anywhere else in the country.

The local media reported several cases in Orange Walk District earlier this year. I haven't seen any media reports of cases in SP.

I don't live on the island - just a very frequent visitor... yet I personally know 4 residents with confirmed cases of Dengue in the past month. I, too, am curious why this isn't being addressed more publicly. I understand the issue of not wanting to frighten away tourists, but what about educating folks on Dengue prevention and mosquito control?

Just because you haven't seen it in the media doesn't mean it's not there.

I sent the Ministry of Health some questions re/Dengue on the Island. I got a response but no answer to any of my questions!

This guy either knows less about Dengue than I do or he is just disembling. It doesn't matter where it is contracted, once an infected person is on the Island, Dengue is on the island. In as little as 9 days, an infected visitor (whether they are exhibiting symtoms or not) has infected mosquitos here and the mosquitos are infecting new victims.

Ministry of Health's BS below. He also promised to follow up but never has.

Kindly be assured your concern is being looked into. I can confirm that there are 2 machines being used to simultaneously to spray San Pedro every 4 to 5 days. Due to inclement weather the spraying is being constantly disrupted as the spraying is rendered ineffective by the rain among several other factors. The threat of dengue on San Pedro usually lies with persons travelling to highly endemic areas within Belize City and also persons who travel from other districts to work on the island - particularly immigrants. I will have an update for you asap.

Regards,

Mr. Bautista

Why the obsession on the subject?

Everybody knows we have Mosquitos at certain times of the year and that they're worse in some areas. It's The Tropics. Take the proper precautions in not getting bitten and you won't catch it. Unsurprisingly there are up to 15,000 residents here who have never had dengue and I know of only a handful in twelve years who have had it and each was the lessor nasty but non fatal variety.

If you are naive enough to think a Third World Ministry of Health Official is going to personally jump to your requests think again. I'm amazed you got an initial reply let alone a follow up, especially if you were as rude as you have been here.

That's an example of "rude".

There is absolutely no reason a tourist/visitor shouldn't be able to get information about Dengue in the area, preventative measures etc.

You might learn how to deal with annual tropical breakouts by reading this:

It's only a big deal if YOU make it a big deal
