Belize Female National Volleyball Team stirring up storm in Honduras

The Belize Female Junior National Volleyball Team is stirring up a storm in Honduras, where it is representing Belize in the U-18 Central American Championship. Held in San Rosa de Copan, Honduras, the team has faced the host country, as well as El Salvador and smashed the competition. But, there are still several other games later this week against regional powerhouses Nicaragua, Guatemala and Costa Rica. Belize faces Nicaragua today, but according to President of the Belize Volleyball Association, Alan Sharp, the team is motivated and ready to win the tournament.

Alan Sharp, President, Belize Volleyball Association

"Yes they are making us very proud. The team played its opening game against host Honduras and I think we pulled off the shock of the tournament in fact that was the press release coming out of Honduras because we beat them three-zero and they are the host country. They brought out the big crowd. But we won three-zero. Last night we won again. We beat El Salvador who played much stronger, but we still won. We won the first two sets, lost the third set but came back to win the fourth set. So we won three sets to one. So that's where we are today. We still have a few matches left to go.

Alan Sharp

We play against Nicaragua today. Nicaragua is one of the three teams that normally are the top in Central America-they have a very strong program. But we have a good chance of beating Nicaragua. If you look at the statistics coming out, both teams are strong, but we have a lot going for us. The girls have been training for some time. Miss Lupita Quan has done an excellent job with girls. We started this program; she taking the big lead, in 2009 and that's where we started a junior team. In 2011, we had a U-team and Junior Team go out. So a lot of these girls that are coming along are from the U-team of two years ago, have been training consistently through that time; have been preparing. Of course we have a lot of challenges here in Belizeplaying in enough tournaments is one; having a place to practice is anotherworking with the schools; luckily this one falls within summer. So we do have challenges as compared to what the other countries have, but we are doing exceptionally well especially considering what we have to go through. I am very proud of the coaching staff and the girls. And I must say that Belize, the reason you see this happening now is because of the fruits of the club teams and the national team girls practicing and playing for so long. And this is what it takes to get to even this level."

The team plays against Nicaragua today at five p.m. Nicaragua, along with Guatemala and Costa Rica are said to be the powerhouses in the region for female volleyball. Belize faces off with those teams last. The overall winner automatically qualifies for the Continental Champions. The sub-champion then has an opportunity, depending on the performance of other teams within the continent.

First It Was Football Now Belize Shines In The Sport Of Volleyball

The Belize Under Fifteen male football will be returning from the Cayman Islands on Monday after a spectacular tournament that saw them barely edged out with Guatemala's one to nothing win over Guyana.

And while they are enjoying their last few days out at the Cayman Island, Belize's Under Twenty Junior female volleyball team is in Honduras at the moment taking part in the Fifteenth Annual Women's U-20 Central American Championship. The team traveled to Santa Rosa de Copan in Honduras where they have already taken part in two matches. Their first match was against the home team on Monday evening.

Belize started the tournament with an impressive showing against Honduras with Sherika Burton topping the charts. Burton pounded the volleyball for fourteen of Belize's points with ten spikes, two blocks, and two aces. Belize dominated Honduras and won in three straight sets: 25-17, 25-13, and 25-20. Jahshema Saunders also came up huge for Belize assisting with thirteen points; six coming by way of spikes and seven by aces.

On Tuesday, our U-20 girls faced up against El Salvador in what appeared to be a continuation from Monday's performance. Our Belizean girls once again managed to walk off of the court with the victory defeating El Salvador's national team in four sets; 25-18, 25-18, 21-25, and 25-23. Once again stepping up to the pressure were Sherika Burton and Jahshema Saunders. Burton topped the charts once more with seventeen points, fifteen by way of kills and two by blocks. Saunders assisted with thirteen points, twelve by way of spikes and one via an ace.

Last night, Belize played power house Nicaragua and unfortunately couldn't keep the streak alive. Belize fell to Nicaragua's national team in three straight sets; 25-22, 25-11, and 25-21. Nicaragua had obviously studied Belize's style of play in the first two games as they came out fully prepared to stop Belize's intentions of surprise plays.

Team Captain for Belize and leading scorer Sherika Burton expressed to local reporters that she felt the team wasn't anxious enough and were not consistent in their serves and claims that they were unable to focus on their passes which eventually cost them the match.

Belize's Coach Lupita Quan stated to reporters, and we quote, "First, congratulations to Nicaragua. Their attacks were sharp and they played as if a medal was in dispute; about my team, I don't agree with Sherika, they were anxious as this team has real possibilities to win a medal for Belize for the first time. Our errors in serves and on top of the net were too many," end of quote.

Belize will now prepare to play Guatemala and Costa Rica in the days ahead and hope to medal in this tournament. We will continue to follow our Female U-20 Volleyball team and bring to you the results of their games to come.

Belize defeats Panama in five sets

SANTA ROSA DE COPAN, Honduras, August 23, 2013.- A very tight victory for Belize over Panama by 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 24-26, 23-25, 17-17) at the 15th Women's U-20 Central American Championship.

This was the second match of the event decided in five sets and became the highest scoring match until now with 229 points total.

Panama came from behind edging Belize whocouldn't seal the deal in three sets, engaging in foolish mistakes which Panama took advantage of; the winners were too self-confident. Belize improves their win-loss record to 3-1 and Panama sustains a 1-4 mark.

With 14 points, Middle Blocker Maurissa Williams was the best scorer for Belize helped by SpikerSherika Burton with 13 points. Setter AdjanisArosemena and SpikerYessileth Mendoza were Panama's the top scorers with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Captain Sherika Burton of Belize not too chatty said "we didn't play our hardest".

On the other side, Aura Chavarria was overwhelmed with their accomplishment "we are very satisfied with what we did today recovering without any doubts in ourselves, sadly we carried with the defeat but we have proven that Panama plays well". She also said to disagree with some of the referee's decisions.

"I am upset because Belize didn't have a proper mind set after the second set, taking things for granted, and still being a young team in mental terms" were the words of Coach LupitaQuan. "Panama pushed us to the limit and has improved in passing and is more confident in their attacking".

"Belize was very strong and never gave up and neither did we. The team was nervous but I am very satisfied the way my team has developed in the tournament coming from less to more."

Our Junior Volleyball National Team: (U-18) girls lost to Costa Rica 25-14, 25-12, 25-12. Costa Rica end up with the Bronze putting us in 4th place. Guatemala wins the Gold and Nicaragua gets the Silver.

We are extremely proud of the team. We know they may feel disappointed with the loss but they had a very good tournament making Belize very proud.

Belize falls shy of a medal in the juvenile Central American volleyball championship

Belize's junior female national volleyball team concluded their participation in the 15th Women's U-20 Central American Championship just shy of a medal.

Team Belize suffered back-to-bad defeats, first by Guatemala on Saturday and then by Costa Rica on Sunday to finish with a 3-3 record and a fourth place finish with a total of 12 points.

The bronze medal went to Costa Rica who finished with a 4-2 record and 21 points.

The silver medal went to Nicaragua who finished with a 5-1 record and a total of 24 points.

Guatemala won their second consecutive title of champions of the Women's U-20 tournament with a perfect 6-0 record and a total of 29 points.

The Coach of Team Belize Lupita Quan is quoted as saying "in life you always want more, I know this is our best ranking ever, but I felt we could've done more. We are lacking mental preparation which only comes from more experience with international events and I wish they can start playing harder earlier and not later on tournaments."
