Hi all,
Just wondering if there were any daytrips from San Pedro to Shipstern nature preserve. I'm aware that we could fly, taxi but that seems to much for a day. I was hoping to take a boat to Sarteneja. Thanks in advance.

You could certainly arrange a boat to take you to Shipstern from San Pedro, but I don't think anyone makes the trip routinely on a tour. Shipstern is not exactly a high-profile destination in Belize. Sarteneja village is pretty sleepy, and the Shipstern reserve is a great place to watch mosquitoes!

Unfortunately I am traveling with two people that have their hearts set on seeing butterflies. If another place exists to see them, I'd gladly welcome a suggestion. I'm not particularly fond of mosquito watching.

There are currently six butterfly farms in Belize, and Shipstern's is not by a long shot the best of the six. In fact, it is barely a butterfly farm anymore -- there are just a few butterflies kept for educational purposes. They no longer export pupae.

The best is Green Hills at Mile 8 of the Pine Ridge Road in Cayo. It is run by the fellow who used to run Shipstern, and his partner.

There are also small butterfly centres at Chaa Creek and The Trek Stop (both in Cayo). There is a sizeable operation at Fallen Stones near PG, and a community educational display near Lamanai.
