Two days ago I stopped and watched the most amazing bird. This was in the flooded area on the northwest side of the road by where the new building is being erected at Reef Village.

It was really big - the size of an adult Great Blue Heron --- But he had a lot of rufus color; all of the underside of his neck, which was long, and splashed on the wings.

His legs were long and his feet were large. He walked in a strange way - lifting each foot high above the water - when people walk like this I think they call it high-stepping.

He was also a bully. There was Snowy egret there and this guy was at least twice the size of the egret and big boy kept threatening the egret until it finally flew off.
Did I have a camera? #@!! NO.

I've searched the internet and can't find a picture. Anyone have a guess?

Tri-Colored Heron sometimes look very red. It would have a white stripe down the front of it's neck.

Elbert - I knew you would know - Yes, I found some pictures of the Tri-Colored Heron with the golden/rufus markings. From the photos the most striking feature about these guys is their attitude.
Thanks

It might also be the "reddish egret". You might check in H. Lee Jones "Birds of Belize" book.

Obviously an egret that has eaten too many red herrings.

Mike - you may be right. I'm going to have to break out the camera and go see if I can find him again.
Electric Dave told me there were two Rosette Spoonbills down there the other day.
