I am a PhD in medical psychology (whatever that is). Anyway, I have a number of friends, MDs, that want to come to Caye Caulker and other parts of Belize and volunteer their services to those that might need medical help. They are Americans. What do we need to do to get them whatever certifications or permissions they need to practice their specialities (neurology, oncology, cardiac, etc). They do not want to take business away from Belizean physicians, they only want to help those that need medical care.

There are many locals with medical problems that don't have the money or specialists here for that matter to even be diagnosed.
I know of one sweet little girl with a serious (physical, not neurological) speech impediment.
Finding out the treatment and cost would sure be a start.
Thanks!

There are quite a few, (but not enough) medical and dental missions that come to Belize from the U.S. for short term project. I would go into google and check out websites for organizations that already have permission to do this, and then join them, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel yourself.
I just went into google and found this from the Belize Ministry of Health:
Belize Voluntary Medical Mission Application
and this...
Medical Missions

I know several medical groups already coming into Belize, but one that focuses on surgical needs of children. I will try to get contact information and find out anything I can. They usually do surgery in California though and it would require being accompanied by a parent.

Here is a group we work with who have been coming to Belize for over 20 years now doing medical and dental. They would be a good source to ask questions. They are also on Facebook:

Everything each of you said helps.

Here is the reality that I face: the docs I know are very busy, have world class skills, and are directed toward their own patients. When I approach them, they are willing to come to CC on vacation and spend part of their time giving medical/dental help to those in need. A few days or so. Most of the medical groups doing great things in Belize ask for a commitment of several weeks or much more. These docs don't have that kind of time. The web sites that Caribbean Colors referenced clearly says that spur of the moment trips by them will not work. They have to give at least 4 months notice and endure, with perhaps good reason, lots of red tape. Its back to the drawing board for me. Thanks everyone for the input.

Cool! PM me if you can find anyone to help.
I've known this kid for 5 years, lives next door, she's really a sweet kid.
She's 8 now, soon going to have a lot of social and other problems if this is not surgically corrected.
Thanks!

It is not an easy process to just come and volunteer, lots of paperwork. Applications. Permits etc. When you get your Belize visa stamped in your passport it reads you are not allowed work, it even states you cant work for free.Take the advice and contact the groups that already have been here, they will have the best advice. You would think any country that needs medical help would welcome you with open arms, but not true, at least not until you have all the permits and paperwork done, which can take awhile. Thats the reason for the 4 months notice. Each individual has to have proper permits and that takes time.
