I'm asked by tourist visiting my shop if they can be scheduled to visit Hol Chan on a day the cruise ships aren't in town.
I'm under the impression The Marine Reserve is off limits to cruse ship visitors??
Am I misinformed or are these tourist just reacting to old and inaccurate information on the internet?

If I were someone in the tourisits business, I think I would seek the answers to their questions from the authorities resposible for the regulations as opposed to asking on the message board.

I would certainly make sure it is off limits to cruise ships and the reserve has a carrying capacity and limits how many people can be in the reserve at any one time. You have to be careful Caye Chapel does not turn into a cruise ship stop and Hol Chan used as their snorkel stop and their hordes not dumped on your docks to populate and pollute your caye. It will devastate your overnight tourism #'s

They brought cruise pass to the area of the reef on CayeCaulker that has now been brought into the Resrve. Maybe three hundred at a time all standing or floating in a shallow place with yellow vests huddled close together.
Some used a corner of their vests to hang on to a coral head at the edge of the group.

Remember about 3 yrs ago when one passenger was and still is lost at sea while snorkeling? That person was from a large cruise ship taken to CC for snorkeling

I remember that, Katie. Probably a situation of a cruise ship passenger never having snorkeled in an ocean environment where there are strong currents. He was probably sucked toward a split in the reef and couldn't manage getting out because of the current.

yep, my point being abhorrence of cruse ship visitors is such that normal tourist call ahead and try to plan their visit to avoid them. Belize has prostituted itself to the Cruse ship industry with some restraint but is entertaining a pimp.
Cab drivers and gift shop owners will disagree as they stand to do a lot of business but at the end of the day we will loose our integrity and beauty to a thankless whore monger.

Amen. The only good cruise ship is one that is being used as an artificial reef.
