Marty Online happy
3 Weeks ago, 7News told you about the island of garbage which washed up onto the shorelines of San Pedro and Caye Caulker. Well, 7News has received a complaint that the San Pedro Town Council has not done enough to clean up the beaches, which is still under those mountains of garbage.

The individual claims that locals on San Pedro have been trying to organize themselves to make cleanup efforts but they need help, which hasn't been forthcoming from the Town Council. As a result, we contacted Mayor Daniel Guerrero today who told us that the person making that complaint is being unfair to the Town Council. He said that since this situation took place, his council has been working very hard to try to clean up, but according to Guerrero, for every few days of progress that they make; more garbage just washes up on the beaches.

Guerrero told us that he's been explaining to the residents trying to encourage them to keep cleaning and not to get discouraged, and he added that they will continue their efforts, even if it is only a temporary measure. He concluded that he's been informed that this situation is affecting different shorelines all along the coast of country.

Contact BDF for help; they assisted with clean ups in PG when similar occurred. Get plenty of crocus sack/rice and sugar bags to haul it away. It is like being invaded

We are 2-3 mi north of the bridge, and the situation here is disgusting and unhealthy. Most issues, of course, are in vacant lots owned by non-residents. It's impossible to walk on the beach without wading through personal hygiene and medical trash. Syringes are everywhere. When I see the birds picking through the garbage it's so sad!

Katie - who at BDF do we contact and who should do the contacting?
We need help with at least one major clean sweep - it is more than dedicated residents can handle.

Ir would be interesting to see if it is mainland garbage flushing out with river flow as Simon has mentioned in the past or whether its from areas and countries north and northeast...

We're now getting massive amounts of wood mixed with the trash. It ranges from whole trees to little twigs with lots of banana trees.

We get this every year around this time. It will get worse before it gets better. The Sargasso Sea empties it's seagrass and vast rubbish deposits that gather on the Atlantic currents and are deposited into the Caribbean each year around now as the currents change.

All of the rivers are South of us and the current typically runs North to South. No Mexican Rivers on the Yucatan other than Rio Hondo which empties behind us into Chetumal Bay.

I certainly believe that to be the case when we get the sargassum invasions but how would that explain whole trees and large quantities of banana trees? Not arguing just interested in the observation Pokey made; some forensics on this stuff as Dane mentioned would be interesting. Got a buddy in Placencia and he mentioend that they get quite a few bananas trees in the sea between them and the mainland at this time of year. The locals attribute that to the rivers adjacent the plantations down there following long periods of heavy rains. Whatever the source though it's flat out ugly...
