Island residents, businesses and tourists can now enjoy the perks of shopping for seafood in one particular location and can be sure it's the best products at great prices. San Pedro, Ambergris Caye now counts with a newly opened seafood market, the National Fishermen Producers Co-operative Society Ltd.

So what can you find at the new sea food market? Products include Lump Crab Meat, Caribbean Crab, Shrimps, Scallops, Crab Claws, Salmon Fillet, Smoked Salmon, Squid Rings, Octopus, Fish Fillet and Whole Fish. Seasonal products include Spiny Lobster Tails, Market Cleaned Conch and Ground Conch.

Barbara Bradley, Executive Secretary of National Fishermen Producers Co-operative Ltd, explained that presently they are accepting produce from local fishermen but only if they are taken to Belize City.

"We currently do not have staff on the island to select produce directly from island fishermen, so we are asking them to bring them in to the city," stated Ms. Bradley. "We are looking into training staff and hopefully have this service available on the island in the near future." The seafood market is located on Pelican Street with opening hours being Monday - Friday 8:00am - 12noon and 1:00pm - 5:00pm and on Saturdays 8:00am - 12noon. Their phone number is 651-2458.

About National Fishermen Producers Co-operative Society Ltd -The Society is a fishing cooperative which was registered in Belize City, Belize Central America on the 29th April 1966. Since then the Society's membership has grown from a single group of fishermen to a handful five hundred and thirty six (536) members.

The role of this Cooperative is to educate members in fishery management and mainly to purchase and market their produce for the best possible price on the foreign market. This will give fishermen a better income and improve their standards of living. The Society exports the best quality seafood to the Canada, USA, Mexico and The West Indies.

Diane - LOL
Actually this is one of the very few streets that I do know. It crosses middle street at Coral Cable and ends at front street between the Lions Den and Sail-Away Cafe.

So San Pedrano's have to bring it to Belize City to then be brought back out to San Pedro?

The guys on back street will have fresher fish.

The co-op will be good for scallops and shrimp though.
