San Pedro Town celebrates 29 years… Happy Township Day!
San Pedro Town celebrated 29 years of being a municipality on November 27th. Two different events took place to commemorate the occasion. The first was an awards ceremony hosted on the beach at Ramon’s Village Resort on the night of Tuesday November 26th and the second was a students’ rally held on Wednesday November 27th at the San Pedro High School. Organized by the San Pedro Town Council, the first event was held to recognize people that have contributed to the growth of the island. Keynote speaker for the occasion was Manager of Ramon’s Village Resort Einer Gomez. In his remarks, Gomez said that the forefathers of the island had a dream and along with their dedication to the settlement, eventually led to the development of San Pedro Town, one of the best municipalities in the country. “But what is most rewarding is that our fathers embraced all that was instilled in them and made this community one of the most envied and respected throughout our country. Our fathers were the ones that paved the way for us to live better lives. The life we enjoy today. With their hard work and sweat they converted a community into a village.” Gomez said the native islanders have embraced what the island has turned out to be. “We have learned to adapt to grow not only as a Town but also as a tourist destination by protecting our environment and at the same time being proud of our past.” He highlighted that it is the togetherness and unity that makes San Pedro stand out from the rest of the country. “Time and time again, we have shown the world that our community is vibrant and alive. Ironically, it’s disasters like hurricanes, fires, sickness that brings out the San Pedranos in us to a fault! A fault that is contagious and admirable. In times of need, we are all one! This quality is not found anywhere and it is this quality that keeps us together. When one succeeds we all succeed.”

SPEECH DELIVERED BY MR. EINER GOMEZ AT THE 29TH TOWNSHIP ANNIVERSARY EVENT HELD AT RAMON'S VILLAGE RESORT.

WONDERFUL SPEECH BY MR. GOMEZ!

-Start-

Thank you Mayor Danny for the invitation.
It is indeed an honor for me to be here with you tonight and humbled by the fact that many of you are people that I look up to, admire and respect.
There is no doubt in my mind that San Pedro is the best place to live!

Our forefathers had a vision!
All that we enjoy today is because of their dedication to their settlement and the inspiration to make their community a prosperous one.
Probably their biggest advantage was that they guided their lives based on their faith in God and their rich Culture. Without those two significant assets this place we all call home would not be the Isla Bonita it is today.

But what is most rewarding is that our fathers embraced all that was instilled in them and made this community one of the most envied and respected thorough out our Country. Our fathers were the ones that paved the way for us to live better lives.
The life we enjoy today.
With their hard work and sweat they converted a community into a village.
It was no easy task!
They were chicleros, leaving their families for months so that on their return they would be providers for their family.
Soon enough they exported coconuts, conch, lobster and fish using the resources that was around them so that they could remain close to their families and solidifying the ideology that unity is strength.
And never forgetting their faith and culture!

My mom still tells us stories about her young years and how they lived. It always sounds so intriguing to me.
She tells us stories about the religious ceremonies that were carried out throughout the year and the elegant balls and other social gatherings.
All of these events united them and made them proud San Pedranos.
I guess that one of the most important vision of our fathers is that they believed that the children were the future so they made sure that by educating them, the community would continue to prosper.
And so it did!
By the late seventies our community was heading for great progress.

The Tourism Industry was inevitable!
Just look around you, the island, the reef, our people; all magnificent.
There was no other route to go!
Thanks to our pioneers like Celi McCorkle, Alan Forman, Chico Gomez, Tio Pil and a few others that had a vision to transform this natural resource into an industry like no other in this Country. I grew up in this industry which we now embrace and call it our livelihood.
Because of these pioneers we now live more comfortable lives in a prosperous community.

Tomorrow we celebrate 29 years of Township. A milestone that we have all embraced with pride and hard work.
And the struggle continues.
We have learned to adapt to growth not only as a Town but also as a Tourist destination by protecting our environment and at the same time being proud of our past.
Today I feel proud of our leaders that are dedicating their time to keep our industry alive, our culture alive, to keep our faith vivid and to embrace growth in a positive way by inviting others into our community regardless of their color or creed.
Time and time again, we have shown the world that our community is vibrant and alive.
Ironically, it's disasters like hurricanes, fires, sickness that brings out the San Pedranos in us to a fault! A fault that is contagious and admirable.
In times of need, we are all one!
This quality is not found anywhere and it is this quality that keeps us together.
When one succeeds we all succeed.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Town of San Pedro will continue to prosper in a positive way.
There is no doubt in my mind that our children will be as proud of us and we are of our fathers and forefathers.
We must continue to work hard and to work together! And this can only be achieved if we continue to keep our Faith alive, if we continue to keep our culture alive and we continue as a united community!

Looking forward to a prosperous tourist season for all!

Happy Township Day!

Thank you.
