On Friday, January 31st, around 3:30PM, the San Pedro Police Department Special Branch assisted the United States of America (USA) Embassy in the capture of a wanted man. He was identified as 46-year-old Grant Kenneth Ice, and is wanted in the city of Los Angeles, California for financial fraud.

Ice was residing at Sun Street, Boca del Rio area and was well-known on the island as Grant Bill Guy. US Authorities escorted Ice to Belize City on the 4PM flight, and officials stated that he would be transported to Belmopan and taken to the US Embassy. Ice is scheduled to be handed over to US Marshalls on Saturday, February 1st and will be flown out to Los Angeles, where he will face charges before Los Angeles police.

First rule in hiding from the law - don't pose for photos for the newspaper.
Second rule - don't become well known.
Third rule - read a lot of crime novels. If you do so you won't miss rules one and two.

Don't hide in small communities where local gringos are obvious.
Medium sized city with suburbs full of white people who look like you.

I dont' know Mr. Ice at all, so this story is not about him - it IS about things that happen that shouldn't.

Some years ago a gentleman who was residing on this island was turned in to "America's Most Wanted" because of a striking resemblance to a photo posted on that show. Just goes to show you what trouble TV can cause ..... Anyway, he was picked up by U.S. Federal Marshalls and locked up in Belize City Queen Street Jail for a few hours awaiting transport to California. The charge - abusing and killing young boys. Thankfully he got his one phone call from jail. An attorney was dispatched to the jail where he demanded to see the photo etc - the photo was a dead-ringer, but the attorney insisted on more proof of identity - he was told that the individual they sought had extensive scars on his legs. My friend was quick to take off his pants and show unblemished legs. He was let go --- but had the attorney not intervened when he did my friend would have been in an airplane, bound for an LA jail where he'd likely be sliced and diced by other inmates who apparently do not like child-killers at all.

So ...... is there a moral to this story? Not sure, but it's damn scary when agents from another country can swoop in and take somebody away without due process. I do hope things have changed since my friend's horrific experience of mistaken identity.

Grant is a friend of mine. I can't image someone who is not hiding and using his real name being guilty of a crime. I noticed it said "accused" not convicted. I hope he is able to return soon. I like him and he was very helpful to me.

I called him Grant. Knew his full name as Grant K. Ice.
He was not hiding.
There are always two sides to every story.

If he wasn't hiding, then why didn't his friends in Southern California know how to reach him? He did commit several crimes - felonies in the state of California. He defrauded friends of huge sums of money. He misled them, created false documents to "prove" he hadn't spent the funds others had entrusted to him. One "friend" who was unlucky enough to trust Grant has lost his good credit and a huge sum.
He made big mistakes and lied and cheated to cover it all up. Prior to those choices, I thought Grant was one of the most trustworthy, kind, fun-loving, friendly, integrity filled persons I had ever known. Sadly, I was wrong and numerous people have been defrauded and ruined financially.
I hope Grant steps up and takes responsibility, only then will he be able to become a truly honorable person of integrity.
It is a sad situation. I hope he makes it right.
