The Port Authority and Police cooperating with one another can stop this rash of boat stealing.
A system is in place and if the two organizations mesh their info it will dramatically curb the market for stolen motors and boats.
Each year all the boats in the country have their license renewed and the process inspects and records in a computer the serial number of the engines on the boat and a detailed description of the boat. You can't get away for very long operating a boat without a Port Authority's inspection.
If the serial number is reported stolen to the police and the information is correlated to the port authority's information the motor or boat will turn up. Currently renewal of licences can happen with motors that have serial numbers from stolen motors or no serial numbers, without the police being aware.
Most of the time the theft of the boat is just to haul the motors to a place where they can be removed and the boat is abandoned. The market for the engine as parts is strong with shops on the mainland of Belize that rebuild motors...another avenue to suppress the stolen boat wave would be to pressure these shops that buy the stolen parts.
If we can hurt the market the incidents will decrease but as it is now the occupation of stealing boats and motors is a lucritive business.
A new 200 hp yamaha is worth about $27,000.00 bz and most boats carry two. A reconditioned engine is selling for $15,000.00 bz

When you register your boat each year they should check the serial numbers. But in the 5 years I've had a boat they never have. Hard to have a system work when they don't check the numbers.

Ron maybe I look suspicious but they look at my numbers and even remark/question about details. This year they had a laptop feeding in the info as it was collected.
Maybe they have the numbers on that old boat you drive memorized and ya just think they aren't paying attention:-)
Seriously the info is there in the Port Authorities computers and it would take just a little effort on the part of the police to mesh that info with stolen boat reports.

I talked with Neno and he said the boat was recovered down by Long Caye just south of Caye Chapel. No engines. He also lamented that BPA doesn't check serial numbers.

100% sure they record the serial numbers when a boat is registered and renew each year. I watch them climb around on the engine and boat and I listen as the give the number to the Port Authority employee that feeds in in the computer. I've had the conversation with them about how it's sad the police don't utilize the info. They even record how many gallons of fuel the boat holds. I have lots of boats and have done this annually for quite a number of years. The serial numbers are on the Seaworthy certificate issued to every boat, recorded with the BPA and mandatory to have present on on each boat. Neno is mistaken.

Sorry Elbert but they are not consistent with checking. I'm sure it's done at first registration but after that ours was done maybe one other time in 8 years. They may be more diligent when they do the mass registrations in town.

I think he's the owner of the stolen boat.

A fish and a bird can fall in love, but where will they build their nest?
