My personal Belize fishing report is that on Tuesday,1/21, I went out for a day on the flats with the highly esteemed guide, Abbie Marin, of Go Fish Belize. It was my first time out for bonefish, and really my first serious salt water fly fishing experience. We caught half a dozen smaller bones in the morning, just to learn the ropes and warm up.

With Abbie's talent for finding the horses, gleaned from 20+ years of experience fishing the flats, and his "A" coaching, I am very proud to say that later in the day, I landed a 24", 5+ lb, bone, then quickly followed that up with a pair of sizable, line stripping bones in the 4 lb range.

An outstanding day on the flats, and an exceptional value as compared to other outfitters, who really did not seem that interested in taking me out that week. I highly recommend Abbie to anyone who has bonefish fever, call him first at 703-646-3474.

Winds: 5-10 daily ranging from West early in the week, to East as the week developed back to West at the end of the week

Air Temperature: High 70's, low 80's for the High. Low 70's, for the lows.

Water Temperature: Temps ranged from 69-71 degrees

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Husband and wife Mike and Georgia came for a week of fishing, snorkeling and relaxing. What they got was loads of bonefish! Capt. Hilberto's legendary shore lunch was mixed with a morning of tarpon fishing with some nice wading for bonefish while lunch was simmering on the fire,. Father son team Paul and Anthony have paired up with Capt. Luis for some bonefish action with some cudas thrown in for fun. Robyn 1 (we have 2 this week) got bonefish while out with Capt. Cinoeh - her first ever and hubby Terry landed a bunch more!! Chris and Capt. Emir got some bones, Murray and Robyn II from Alberta got rid of their winter blues with some silver bones with Capitano Cinoeh.

PERMIT (Palometta): Kim came through to break the permit slump! He says he owes it all to Capt Kechu and they were so close to a grand slam he could taste it, but the tarpon decided not to taste his fly after multiple follows! Dan from Orvis was oh-so-close with a big permit that cut him off half through a nice fight. Doreen got her first permit of her career with Capt. Junior.

TARPON (Sabalo): Mike landed a nice 30-pound fish while fishing hard with Capt. Cesar. It was a tough battle that Vinny got on video. Sam launched one in the air about 10 feet in front of the boat while fishing with Captain Tomas, but at the apex of the leap the fly came fly back right at him. Sam could swear he heard the fish say "nanna, nanna na na" as he descended back into the water! Jimmy from Orvis' Cleveland store landed another tarpon for Capt. Cesar fishing the morning of his departure. Capt. Cesar is on tarpon fire this week returning guest Ralph hooked up 3 today that were all over 80 pounds!!! Terry (husband of Robyn 1, got his first ever tarpon on a fly rod on an overcast Friday, 15 pounds but full of it, 6 jumps and 10 minutes later he was beside the boat.

FISHING REPORT

February 2nd- February 8th, 2014

Weather Conditions: Generally fair weather mostly sunny to start the week

Winds: 10-15 from the East early in the week, slowing to 5-20 at the end of the week.

Air Temperature: High 70's, low 80's for the High. Low 70's, for the lows.

Water Temperature: 70-73 degrees

Moonphase: The first quarter moon was on on Feb 6th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Richard, Doreen, Fanny, Barbara II, Tina, Bif, Rob, Cathy, Kajsa, Bo, Carole, Barbara I (aka Bonefish Barb), Mary, Patty, Adam, Carole all boated a bunch of bonefish early in the week despite the wind. With the easterly wind the entire West coast of Ambergris is pretty flat and somewhat sheltered! Peter and his young grandson Andrew headed out for a couple days with Capt. Tomas. Mickey got warmed up with some nice bonefish out with Capt Tomas. Later in the week he brought out his wife Gloria who caught her first bonefish ever!

PERMIT (Palometta): 1 permit each for Richard and is lovely wife Doreen while fishing with Capt. Cesar. Richard has a 2-day streak going with another permit! Kajsa and Bo had a couple of permit with Captain Kechu, Bif and Capt. Emir teamed up for a nice permit late in the week. Cathy landed a permit with Capt JR. Philip went out with Nic and Capt. Kechu. This was Philip's first time in saltwater, and both Nic and Philip landed a permit. Nic also landed a permit just a few minutes earlier. So much for my orientation where a warn folks how hard permit fishing can be! The count came to 10 permit this week!

TARPON (Sabalo): Captain Cinoeh's tarpon with Terry and Robyn set the tone for the week, The tarpon bite was on! Doreen just missed her slam by a thread on the first day of the week when she got a tarpon to eat, but couldn't get it to stick! It was Richards turn to miss the slam today as a tarpon ate but didn't hookup! Richard finally got his tarpon as part of a 24 hour slam (permit one afternoon and tarpon and bone the next morning!!) The IGFA was closed so his fishing partners decided to allow it with a new name "The 24 hour slam"! Bob got a beauty to eat along with Capt. Alex. Anne and Jason were out on Savannah and came tight to several big fish in the 80 pound range, jumping a couple and getting a couple more to eat.

Grand Slam: The 24 hour slam (see above) was awarded to Richard for landing a permit one afternoon and the tarpon and bonefish early the next day, yes, we know it is sort of a loophole but lets go with it!! Capt. Cesar was on the poling platform.

OTHER SPECIES: Jacks, Barracudas, groupers, triggerfish, tripletail, yellow jackets, pompano

FISHING REPORT

February 8 - 15th , 2014

Weather Conditions: Very welcome sunny skies this week with a few scattered showers. Most days.flat out gorgeous!

Winds: NW 5 to 10, N 5 to 10, NW 5 to 10, ENE 5.

Air Temperature: 74 - 84 degree Fahrenheit; 23.3 C - 28.8C

Water Temperature: 75-80 degrees

Moonphase: Full Valentine's moon on the 14th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): The sun came out and anglers had numerous shots at bonefish both on fly and spin. Large schools were targeted along with some big boys tailing way up in the skinny water. Tony was here from New Jersey, and landed several bonefish on fly with Captain Vince. Bill went out with Capt. Jr., and caught his first bonefish on his first day trying a fly rod! He went out with his buddies earlier in the week with spin gear. They had a blast, but this was a special treat and reward for stepping out of his comfort zone. Bob and Paula ripped it up with Captain Erlindo - several bonefish on fly. Roslyn 12 sighted bonefish on fly with Captain Kechu. Dr. David, his son Greg and Amber had several days with Captain Tomas with bonefish as their "most action," fish.

PERMIT (Palometta): Out of control good! Nick landed a permit on fly with Captain Kechu, Matt went out on day numero uno and landed a beauty with Captain Emir, Jason landed about a 16 pounder with Captain Emir and David landed a beauty on spin with Captain Kechu. Nice going!

TARPON (Sabalo): The tarpon fishing this week is "like you read about!" Gorgeous. Steve and James had EPIC tarpon fishing with Captain Cesar. The jumped 12 and landed 5 - one 80, two 60, and 3 in the 30 plus range. Amazing Go Pro footage. Steve danced that fly in perfect pro form. They loved the tan bunny on 3/0. Then, Jason and Ann had a blast with Captain Emir. Jason landed a 50 lb tarpon and we have some great pictures of jumps! Rob was so happy to land his poon with Captain Emir. He also targeted smaller tarpon the day before with Captain Luis and put a few in the air. And Lea went out with her husband David and Captain Kechu and landed a 60 lb on spin. Wow! Poon fever!

SNOOK: Everyone was too tarpon crazed to look for snook this week.

OTHER SPECIES: Barracuda! We have had some outstanding barracuda fishing this week - both on fly and spin. These fish are totally underrated. They take like they mean it, they get big air, and they taste good. Congratulations to all anglers who put those cuda's in the air!

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, CI Special

FOR PERMIT - Turneffe Crab, Avalon, Big Squimps!

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Chartreuse toad, White toads and bait fish patterns.

Guide of the week: Captain Cesar for taking two pros and giving them fantastic tarpon fishing on fly. They put 12 in the air and landed 5. Cesar is also getting pretty damn good with his camera! Thank you Cesar!

This Week's Summary:

We are just giddy around here. We had two months of rain and some pretty tough weather. This week we have our beautiful Belize weather back here on Ambergris Caye! Anglers and non anglers alike enjoyed the beautiful sunrises and days filled with sea breeze under sunny blue skies. Julie has been to EP the last three years celebrating her birthday! It's so much fun to see our repeat guests. David and Lea have returned to fish with Captain Kechu, and Rob, Kyra and Tegan are pretty much super stars around here. It was a week where hearts were captured by the special fish that make dreams come true. Through fishing, families spend time together and friends reunite for laughs and more stories to share down the road. Thank you for a beautiful week of fish and hearts.

FISHING REPORT

February 15 - 22nd, 2014

Weather Conditions: Mostly sunny skies, a few clouds and some wind.

Winds: NE 5 - 10, E 10 - 15, ESE 10 - 20.

Air Temperature: 74 - 84 degree Fahrenheit; 23.3 C - 28.8C

Water Temperature: 75-80 degrees

Moonphase: Last Quarter on the 22nd.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): We had a big group from Orvis this week. Jason was the trip leader and his main word"Rad!" Everyone caught numerous bonefish. Toward the end of the week Bill and Bruce made a special point to tell me how much they enjoyed fishing with Captain Sinoe. They stalked one and two big bones at a timepicking them out from skinny water as they approached the boat. We had beginners - most of whom had never fished the saltwater flats, and they are leaving today feeling confident with their bonefishing skills on fly. Good work everyone! Bonefish Awards were given to: Peggy, Jen, Young, Maz, Brian, Tom, John, Kris (who now has bonefishing wired), Eric, Carlos and Matt. Special shout out to Scott for sharing his favorite lure for bones and positive fishing attitude.

PERMIT (Palometta): Well, sometimes anglers just tap into a vein of luck. But let's remind ourselves, while luck is a good thing - it's preparation that make luck so wonderful. This is our story for Matt this week. With Captain Emir as his guide, and Gordy, our guide in training - they hooked 12 permit on fly and landed 7 on fly. Yes. Matt's lovely wife Andrea captured many moments in digital format. Amazing stuff! Congratulations Matt! And thank you Andrea for the great pics.

TARPON (Sabalo): Mr. Lucky Matt landed a nice 30 pounder on fly with Captain Emir. Tom landed a 25 pounder on fly with Captain Vincent. There were shots and eats from other anglers, but these two made it to the boat. Nice!

SNOOK: Jen and Peggy had some great shots at huge, like 15 - 20 lb snook on fly with Captain Luis. But those darn snook just didn't want to eat! Still fun, but none landed.

OTHER SPECIES: Jacks! Brian told me this morning that the highlight of his fishing this week was landing a 9 lb jack on fly. He saw the fish by himself, cast to it, fish ate and it was a good 30 min fight to the boat. Since jacks are not catch and release, the jack was made into fish fingers and the group at the bar enjoyed some good fun food! Jacks are very prevalent, big fun and put up an amazing fight. There are plenty of times out there on the flats when you can't tell if you hooked into a jack or a permit! Big fun.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, CI Special

FOR PERMIT - Turneffe Crab, Avalon, Big Squimps!

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Chartreuse toad, White toads and bait fish patterns.

Lures that worked - Scott brought a great lure from Shimano. See pictures below. He landed several fish on this lure!

Guide of the week: Captain Emir. What an amazing week as he worked together with our angler Matt. They hooked 12 permit and landed 7 and then throw a nice 30 lb tarpon into the mix. Way to go!

This Week's Summary:

Everyone said, "The week went too fast!" And it did. What fun to meet new friends and most enjoyable for us at El Pescador to see you all leave with big smiles. It is so rewarding for the guide team to see you leave with more confidence and with plans to return! Anglers and guides working together make dreams come true. And remember, you now become the teachers for your family and friends. They look at your adventurous self and think that they too might have that possibility someday to land a fish on a fly. Or wade the flats with a special lure like Scott's. Carlos brought his wife and four children here to run around in the sun and be exposed to the life from the sea. We are thrilled you joined us and look forward to seeing you all soon. In the meantime, practice your cast so you too can cast to your dreams!

FISHING REPORT

February 22 - March 1st , 2014

Weather Conditions: Perfect. A bit windy some days, but not bad.

Winds: E 10 - 15 (gusts up to 25), ESE 5 - 10, E @ 5.

Air Temperature: 74 - 84 degree Fahrenheit; 23.3 C - 28.8C

Water Temperature: 75-80 degrees

Moonphase: Last Quarter on the 22nd.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Jack landed some beautiful big bonefish in the 4 and 5 lb range on fly this week with Captain Emir. His fabulous wife Ann landed her first bonefish on fly, and she was thrilled. I enjoyed listening to Ann describe what she witnessed watching Jack fish for the big bones. "Skinny water with their backs and tails out of the water!" That's right. That is what we call fun! Not easy and very rewarding. Jason and Jamie are here for their honeymoon. They had a great time with Captain Jr. and learned a ton. The next day he had his new bride paddle him around in a canoe in the back lagoon and he landed a bonefish unguided! Very satisfying. And way to go on picking a great gal! Joe and Renee have fished with fly several places in the salt. They were looking for tarpon and permit - had their shots, but the big fun for them ended up all about Mr. Bonefish. They landed over twenty respectable bones a day with Captain Luis. Our UK friend, Terry had great bonefishing with Captain Luis earlier in the week. Bob and Cheray landed their first bonefish on fly with Captain Gilberto. And our French angler, Patrick, landed several bonefish on fly with Captain Tomas. Tomas doesn't speak French, and Patrick doesn't speak English or Spanish, so it was pretty funny watching these two communicate. Bottom line - fishing knows no boundaries, it is its own language. They both repeated, "strip, strip, strip" and they would bust up laughing. Bill was spin fishing with his buddies and he was the only one that landed a bonefish. Everyone else landed several other species, but he was the one that got the bones! Way to go.

PERMIT (Palometta): Check out the beautiful permit Sidney landed on fly with Captain Cesar. Love it! And our dear friend Kevin was here with his wild brother Kelly, and his wonderful dad, Hal. They have been here to El Pescador several times, so it's special when they get what they want! Kevin landed a permit on fly with Captain Gilberto. Andy is also a return angler here with his wife Cindy. Andy landed a permit on fly one day with Captain Kechu, then went out the next day and landed four! We'll see what he does with his last day out there. Andy is really happy. And congratulations to Bill who landed his permit on spin with Captain Kechu. Permit fever! And remember the honeymooners? - Jamie rowing her husband around for Mr. Bonefishwell, she was rewarded with a permit on spin with Captain Jr. Way to go!

TARPON (Sabalo): When the wind moves to the south, Savannah can get off color. Which it did. But when it clears - and it usually clears in less than a few hours, and the bite is on! Brothers Mark and Kevin were fishing with Captain Cesar this week. They have had several shots and put a couple in the air! Kevin's tarpon jumped five times before the fish won. See Kevin's picture, "Two days before jumping a tarpon." Pretty funny. Yep, it isn't snowing here. And I'm thrilled to announce that Patrick did get his tarpon on fly with Captain Tomas. He fished Savannah and they fished the lagoons. Patrick loved the lagoon fishing for tarpon, and it was there he was successful! Their common language"strip, striiiiip, striiiiiiiiip!"

SNOOK: Captain Luis had Terry in snook, but they were not interested in the fly. Several shots and change ups, but they wanted nothing to do with it. Oh well. Let's keep figuring it out!

OTHER SPECIES: Barracuda! We have had some outstanding barracuda fishing this week - both on fly and spin. These fish are totally underrated. They take like they mean it, they get big air, and they taste good. Congratulations to all anglers who put those cuda's in the air! The most landed goes to Bill and Walter who landed over ten barracuda on spin with Captain Raton! But the biggest cuda landed this week goes out to Kelly. He landed a 25 pounder on spin with Captain Emir. Wow. Mr. Crunch provided big, big fun.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, CI Special

FOR PERMIT - Turneffe Crab, Avalon, Big Squimps!

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Chartreuse toad, White toads and bait fish patterns.

Guide of the week: Captain Kechu for getting Andy into 5, yes 5, permit on fly this week!

This Week's Summary:

It was really nice to see Jay and Debra enjoying their good friends Steve and Chris here at El Pescador. They fished and enjoyed a fabulous shore lunch with Captain Jr. It was also wonderful to see the Krause brothers here with their amazing dad, Hal. Thanks for visiting Hal! Patty and Jim were here for their annual visit. They don't fish, but they sure do love the wild life here! Steve started calling them, "the lagoon people!" They left with their annual deep dark tan to the snow of the north. There was a great feeling in the lodge this week. Beautiful weather, good friends and outstanding fishing. And once again we are reminded that fishing is a beautiful universal language. We are always grateful. Thank you!

FISHING REPORT

March 1 - 8th, 2014

Weather Conditions: Sunny with isolated clouds and thunderstorms

Winds: E 5 - 10, SE - 5, NW 5, NE 5 - 10, E @ 5.

Air Temperature: High 83 F. Low 78 F.

Water Temperature: mid 70's.

Moonphase: First Quarter on the 8th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Big smiles all around from our return anglers Barry and Jeff. They had a great time out there enjoying their bonefishing with Captain Alex. Perfect sight casting conditions allowed these guys to hunt "the ghost of the flats" in skinny water. Jamie and Jason were here for their honeymoon. They waded the flats and landed bonefish as Captain Jr. prepared a delicious shore lunch. Ray brought his son Christian and his friend Brendan to explore the flats of Ambergris Caye with El Pescador. They all landed bonefish on fly, and for Brendan it was his first saltwater experience. They said they will be back for more fun! Dr.Dan and his fish crazed daughter Lauren, both landed several bonefish on fly with Captain Tomas. Bob and John said from the get go, "We know nothing!" They were surprised with their fishing, and then reported, "We have it wired." They are leaving stronger anglers and look forward to mastering fly fishing on their next trip. Dr. Bruce landed bonefish on his own in the lagoon and then went out to do it all again with Captain Cinoe. Jeff landed some big bones with Captain Luis up by the Park. The three generations of fishermen - Glen, Scott, Jeff and Glen all landed bonefish on fly. Yay!

PERMIT (Palometta): Permit fishing has been incredible!!!!!!! Andy landed a total of 7 permit on fly with Captain Kechu. Then the father son duo, Scott and Graham showed up and went wild with Captain Emir and Gordy. Graham learned his double haul the first day. Then he proceeded to hook 12 permit and land 10 on fly! His father was beaming. The rest of know he is ruined for life! But, maybe not. This sixteen year old just smiles back and has fun regardless. Christian landed a permit with Captain Jr. - his father was also very happy. Peter and Greg were here with permit as their goal. Greg was really happy with bonefish, but his father pushed him to explore the madness of permit fishing with a fly. He had some great shots and near misses and he now knows the game. His father Peter got schooled with Captain Kechu and together they made it happen. This was Peter's goal, Mr. Permit. Teamwork! Bruce and Captain Jr. were out scouting around when they ran into a big school of permit. Bruce was armed with fly and spin and decided to grab the spin with live crab. The permit destroyed it! And I lost count of what was going on with Dr. Chris. I did see a picture of a 18 lb permit landed on fly with Captain Cesar. He also landed one on spin the first day out.which went toward his slam! Ty went out on a day trip with Captain Erlindo and landed 3 permit on fly! Jason is here from Crested Butte Outfitters. His group is joining him today, but he is already warmed up with permit on fly with Captain Emir. OK, that's 24 permit landed on fly and 2 on spin! Wow.

TARPON (Sabalo): The tarpon fishing has been flat out beautiful this week. Savannah was in pretty shape a few days as were some of the spots down south. Chris landed his poon on spin with Captain Cesar which went toward his slam on spin. They also landed a tapon on fly. Aaron was here from Bow River Outfitters and landed a beauty on fly with Captain Luis. Dan and Lauren had several shots, eats and a couple of jumps on fly with Captain Tomas. Next time Lauren! Scott had one that he fought hard for 45 minutes, and then broke close to the boat. Captain Sinoe said it was a fish around 70 lbs! And remember Bob and John who did said they knew nothing? Well they both landed tarpon on spin for a total of 3 to the boat with Captain Vince.

OTHER SPECIES: Aaron landed a 20 lb cuda on 12 lb test! That was fun. Some of the boats found big schools of jacks which wore the anglers out! Jack Crevalle = Fun for fly and spin.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Gotcha, Crazy Charlie's in tan or white, just about anything would work - mostly size 8 and 6, some with weedguards.

FOR PERMIT - Our standard never gives up: Orange Christmas Island Special in size 4 or 6, Avalon in size 2, and Gotcha's in size 4 or 6. Some crabs in 6, tan. Mantis shrimp, tan with bead chain eyes - it works.

FOR TARPON - Chartreuse toad, slow easy twitchy retrieve - depends on what the fish is doing. Watch and listen. On Savannah we are using 40 and 50 lb shock. Let the fly settle, then move it. White, tan, pink - bunnies and toads. . Really fun tarpon fishing in skinny water right now! Favorite color - tan.

Guide of the week: It's a tie! Captain Emir getting 16 y/o Graham into 10 permit landed on fly! And Captain Cesar for getting Chris into his slam and countless other fish!

This Week's Summary:

Spring is in the airand that means time to plan your tarpon fishing! This from Andy Mill's, "A Passion for Tarpon."

"There's nothing more simultaneously exciting and nerve-racking than hooking the fish of your dreams. There are countless nights of tying fresh knots, designing new flies, massaging tackle. Hell, our lives are driven by passion and love, memories and dreams. But we are also driven by work, triaffic, bills, phones, e-mail and all the other things we race away from to get to the rivers, oceans or mountains. We are rarely more keenly alive than when something to which we've dedicated so much of our energy and attention comes to fruition. Or failure."

FISHING REPORT

March 8 - 15th, 2014

Weather Conditions: A few thunderstorms and a few cloudy mornings. Mostly sunny skies throughout the week.

Winds: E 5 - 15, NNW 10, ESE 5 - 15.

Air Temperature: 74 - 84 degree Fahrenheit; 23.3 C - 28.8C

Water Temperature: 75-80 degrees

Moonphase: March 8th, First Quarter

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Debra was too intimidated to start on the casting platform during our evening casting session. She said she would wait until the next morning when everyone had left, and then she would practice. When I went out to give her some pointers, she was already so excited to fish the next day. She had a solid 40 ft, accurate cast and this is what helped her land her first bonefish on fly! We had a lot of fancy awards this week, and Debra's bonefish on fly was one of them. Her husband Glen and daughter Kelly ripped em up on fly - I lost track of the numbers of bones they caught with Captain Luis. The O'Shaughnessy family came here with the Ray family to fish and become better fishermen. And this they did. It was Jamey's graduation present - to come to EP with his family and fish. Jamey loves his fly fishing. He had some big bones landed with Captain Tomas! His dad, Michael, had a beautiful double haul by the time he left in addition to several bonefish landed on fly. His lovely wife Clare also landed her first bonefish! She went out with her son Alex and they both landed some nice bonefish. Robert was here with his daughter Carolyn. He was so proud that as soon as he saw me he shouted, "Carolyn landed her first bonefish on the fly rod!" Hunter was here with his dad, Kurt. Hunter landed some nice bones on fly. Steve and Mark fly fished with Captain Alex and told me how much they enjoyed bonefishing the skinny water for 4 and 5 lb bonefish. Big fun. The Watford family was also here for spring break. Joe, Meredith, and their sons Jacob and Matt all landed bonefish! Greg wasn't looking for bones, but they ended up being a nice break from tarpon fishing. Yeah, our bones aren't as big as the Bahamas, but they still make us smile. And mixing it up sometimes brings the fish! George loved chasing bones on fly as well. Gary, Kunio - we loved watching you guys come in at the end of the day. And we can't forget Brett and Bronwen - especially when I awarded their bonefish pins early in their trip! Wil, one of our younger anglers, is used to catching fish and it was no surprise that he landed several nice bonefish. And our six spin anglers ripped it up. It was a true pleasure to meet such a fun group of guys. James, David, Don, Thomas, Bill and James - thanks for all the laughs. My favorite bonefish story this week was all about Sydney and Sawyer Rogers. Sydney went out in the lagoon with her family and landed her first bonefish on fly! Then, her 8 y/o brother Sawyer did the same thing! It was also such a treat to be fishing the flats with a beautiful fishing family I have known for years. Congratulations to all of our anglers that landed bonefish on fly and spin this week!

PERMIT (Palometta): Hold on! OK, Jason was here from Crested Butte Angler's. Whoa! He landed 4 permit on fly with Captain Emir, and those that were in his group were just as happy! Craig landed a 25 pounder on fly with Captain Cinoeh. (check it out on our El Pescador facebook page and like us!). Ed landed a permit on fly with Captain Kechu. Dick landed 5 permit on fly with Captain Gilberto in one day! And a real treat is that his beautiful bride Emily also landed a permit on fly. She broke the rod, but the fish was landed! And yes, I was thrilled that my long time fishing buddy, Matson, landed a permit on fly with Luis. But the big story this week was all about Campbell. Campbell landed 2 permit on fly one day with Captain Cesar, and his dad Josh landed one on fly as well. Then, the next day he landed another one to SLAM!. At 17, we are pretty sure he is our youngest angler to SLAM with fly. Amazing permit fishing on fly this week!

TARPON (Sabalo): I was thrilled that Kurt landed his tarpon on fly with Captain Luis. They had been stalking these fish and then it all came together! And then, drum roll.Campbell with his tarpon on fly with Captain Cesar for his SLAM! Yay! Lot's of eats, jumps and misses for Glen, Kelly and Kunio. Don't worry Kunio, next time you and Captain Tomas will get revenge! Nice fishing everyone.

SNOOK: Captain Luis has his spots..but they didn't want to eat this week.

OTHER SPECIES: Barracuda on fly and spin: jacks, jacks and more jacks: ladyfish; snapper - all on fly and spin.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, CI Special, small crabs.

FOR PERMIT - Turneffe Crab, Avalon, Big Squimps!, Mantas shrimp patterns - size 4.

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Chartreuse toad, White toads and bait fish patterns.

Guide of the week: Captain Cesar for making life memories for Campbell Bracken! At 17, Campbell was awarded his first Grand Slam pin. Tons of people were thrilled over this amazing day of fly fishing for Campbell, his father Josh (who also landed a permit on fly) and Captain Cesar.

This Week's Summary:

Week's Summary: Our fishing life intertwines us with some spectacular people and places. Yes, we are in search of a better cast to land the fish of our hearts, but the most precious part of the story is always the people. We were sold out this week with father and sons, father and daughters, mother's and sons and families enjoying being present with one another. Fishing brought you all together to share this week with us at El Pescador. Thank you. I know it gave me goose bumps as I was wading the flats with Matson, his wife Kathy, Sam (who at 14 can cast 80 easy), Sydney and of course, Sawyer. Sawyer learned to cast 55 ft at 8. But his dad does own Angler's West - one of the best fly shops in Montana. I heard Matson's voice travel over the water as he guided his family into fish. It was a very familiar voice as we used to guide the same rivers. I would hear his voice instructing his anglers. And then, here he was, visiting us with his family - and his voice, teaching with joy and extreme patience. Some of the simple pleasures mean so much. Thank you everyone for a great week. Fish On!

Cast to your dreams!

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Mr. Bonefish was really appreciated this week! We had Camille learn to cast and then land her first bonefish on fly! Captain Alex was amazed at her progress throughout the week. Her dad Mikey just beaming and taking a few shots from the boat as well. He landed some nice bones, but it was most thrilling for him to watch his beautiful daughter delight in taking on a new challenge and loving it! Gloria celebrated her birthday and also delighted in Camille's progress. She was the family photographer as they cast and fished. Mark and Carleigh also had some fun bonefishing, Steve and Mark left here loving their bonefishing on fly. Tim and his son Cameron were stoked everyday they returned to the dock - they landed plenty of bones on fly in addition to some action from other fish as well. Helaine showed up by herself to also take on a new challenge - fly fishing the saltwater flats for the first time. She and Captain Luis had big fun. Helaine landed some really nice bonefish on fly. Bryan also was a newbie - he and Captain Vince kicked butt on the bonefish. John brought his family back for more fun fly fishing this year. They had three days of some nice bonefishing for all of them with a permit thrown in the mix. Roger caught some really nice big bonefish with Captain Cinoeh, and so did his daughter Stephanie. But Stephanie's big prize is in the next section called permit. That goes for Lloyd and Christy as well. They are also in the next section "permit," but they were happy with their bonefishing in the skinny water down by Congrejo. Don brought his big fun bunch of guys down to have a great fishing trip and that is what happened! Don, David, Thomas, Bill and James all had several bonefish landed on spin. Nice going guys. Tracy was out with Captain Gilberto and landed bones as well. All of our anglers that fished with guides this week landed bonefish, and to that, big cheers! And since we are celebrating, I would like to congratulate my sister Janet and brother in law, Richard, for going out in the back lagoon and landing bonefish for the first time! They love their fly fishing so it was a double blessing for me looking at their lit up faces telling me about their day. Our lagoon fishing is incredible. For those that take the time to explore on their own, there are rewards! Michael and Thomas fished everyday with Captain Raton. At 17, they have know each other most of their lives. They loved exploring and fishing the lagoon in the late afternoon. And yes, Thomas was rewarded with a big ol bonefish which is featured on our facebook page. Check it out.

PERMIT (Palometta): OK! Lloyd landed his first permit on fly with Captain Kechu and was thrilled! Christy landed one on spin. They had a blast. John also landed a permit on fly with Captain Kechu. Gregg landed permit on fly with Captain Gilberto. And Bud also landed a permit on fly. Permit is one of those creatures that gets under your skin if you love a challenge with a fly rod. Everyday Stephanie would go out and pray her shot would tempt at least one. She practiced her double haul - which work really well, and then.the last day, the last EXTRA hour with Captain Luis, it happened. She landed her first permit on fly! And her dad Roger had one eat but it didn't stick. Wow, we were thrilled for all of you! Congratulations.

TARPON (Sabalo): Hands down the big delight for everyone at the lodge this week was when we found out 10 y/o Logan landed his first tarpon with Captain Alex. He was fishing with his dad Tim. Tim would take out his fly gear and then set up Logan with spin. Logan was also getting pretty good with his fly casting, but he didn't want to waste the shot by coming up short. So, he stuck with using live sardines, and whamoo! Same deal as what happened to Luis. Alex stayed out the extra hour and it was then he saw Logan's rod start to leap with a big ol poon on the other end. There were eats, follows and visions that will not be erased - tarpon fishing will do that to a person. Nice going.

SNOOK: Still around!

Grand Slam: Darn close for some anglers!

OTHER SPECIES: Barracuda on fly and spin: jacks, jacks and more jacks: ladyfish; snapper - all on fly and spin. And my brother in law Richard landed a huge jack the day he was out with Captain Erlindo. Yay!

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, CI Special, small crabs

FOR PERMIT - Turneffe Crab, Avalon, Big Squimps!, Mantas shrimp patterns - size 4.

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Chartreuse toad, White toads and bait fish patterns.

Guide of the week: Since I decide, it's a tie! Captain Luis for Stephanie's first permit on fly. And Captain Alex for providing Logan with his tarpon! They both went the extra mile to make it happen. Thank you!

This Week's Summary:

Bottom line, fishing is really, really good right now here at El Pescador! Wow. Award ceremonies every night are filled with stories about dreams coming true. Beaming faces, proud parents and a proud fishing director! The guides have been very committed to making each day special for their anglers. It's truly rewarding witnessing relationships between the guides and their anglers grow. Send me your pictures you guys! [email protected]. We want to brag about you on our facebook page. As they say here in Belize, "Why not?" For those of you getting ready for your trip - practice your cast! The ones that show up practiced are making huge leaps forward in their casting once they get here. Isa and I have enjoyed this week as we tally up what has been going on out there in the day of fishing. My bonus this week was of course having my family here. It was so special for me to watch my fish-crazed sister and brother-in-law cast and learn on the flats. Now you know! Thank you to all of my El Pescador family for making my family feel so welcomed. From the EP fishing department we hope to see you again soon casting to your dreams. Fish On!

Cast to your dreams!
