Progress at the San Pedro Sunset Board Walk & Water Taxi Terminal Project

Much progress has taken place in the project, the Fisherman's Promenade is up and almost complete while the back street is paved and the Water Taxi Terminal and Platform is well underway. The rehabilitation of the Old Football Field is taking place and by the looks of it the field will be ready for this year's Costa Maya Festival in August.

STP projects on Ambergris Caye are moving forward

The San Pedro Sunset Boardwalk and Water Taxi Terminal Projects are expected to be completed by November 2013. Despite major opposition by a sector of the Ambergris Caye residents, ground was broken in June of 2012, 14 months ago. Terry Wright from the Sustainable Tourism Project (STP) Unit said that up to date, the project is going well and it not too far away from completion. He explained that 100% of the lagoon area for the field has been reclaimed, and the top layer of sand fill is currently being spread. In addition, 100% of the water taxi concrete platforms, complete with masonry work, roofing and rendering of terminal building walls, is finished. Wright said that the wooden picket sections of the perimeter fence have been installed, with only the top portion underway.

Wright also indicated that the promenade works along Nurse Shark Street is 90% completed, three boat ramps are constructed, and additional curbing and drain structure is underway, as is the construction of public bathrooms. "A local consultant is currently being contracted to assist with the start-up of the management and operations of the new facility upon completion," said Wright. "To date the construction contractor has been extremely accommodating of the public events traditionally held at the old football field, such as the Costa Maya festival, Miss San Pedro Pageant and the Independence Celebrations. Despite these slight disruptions to the construction schedule, completion is estimated for mid-November 2013."

The STP Unit is coordinating with utility companies and the contractor is ensuring that all necessary water and sewage connections are in place prior to cementing the road.

That's good news that the project is almost complete. The top layer of sand is being spread. Just for information purposes, that top layer of sand was hauled from a dredge pit about 4 miles south of town a couples weeks ago. You probably saw the massive dual axle trucks going up and down the road for 3 days.
The trucks, as always, did much damage to the south dirt road. Now that the rain has returned, the large holes are much deeper than ever. My beef and question is: what happened to the agreement between the town officials and the businesses that dredge and haul sand constantly from down south, that was suppose to insure that for every 10 loads hauled out, 1 load would be put on the road in the low damaged spots. It never happens and the grade level of the road just gets lower and lower and the holes get deeper and deeper. The base of the road is pretty good - it just needs some sand put back on top of it. These sand dredge companies are taking the natural resources from this area and not being responsible for the damage they do.
Thank you for letting me say my piece.

The San Pedro Boardwalk & Water Taxi Inauguration: A Look Around

A few days ago, I was passing on the Back Street of San Pedro and saw this sign. And quite honestly? After the flurry of activity around this expensive re-do of the "Old Football field" or Saca Chispas at the back side of town last year, I had kinda forgotten about this big project.

The $6 million US project was planned to move water taxi traffic (both domestic and international) to the back side of the island to centralize arrivals. It was also planned with a sorely needed REAL (like with grass and everything) football field and with a full board walk along the lagoon side of town. A project to bring traffic to this area.

Here is a bit of what the area used to look like

Boats, small docks and huts.

And here is what I saw yesterday.

San Pedro Boasts New Sunset Board Walk and Water Taxi Terminal

On Friday, March 14, 2014, the San Pedro Sunset Board Walk and Water Taxi Terminal was officially inaugurated as part of The Sustainable Tourism Program (STP) which comes to a close this month. The STP is a US$ 15 million tourism development program funded by the Government of Belize and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The overall goal driving the project was to strengthen the tourism sector's contribution to the national economy through infrastructural investment, and planning and capacity building tools, to promote growth of Belize's tourism industry in a sustainable manner.

The San Pedro Sunset Boardwalk and Water Taxi Terminal development was the largest infrastructure investment under component 1 of the Sustainable Tourism Program. The overall goal of the project was to create a new destination within San Pedro Town which will consolidate water travel to serve local and international traffic, provide new opportunities for leisure and commerce, build public-private partnerships for commercial and cultural growth, promote waterfront beautification and further the overall enhancement of Ambergris Caye as a tourist destination.

Have any of the water taxis started using the new terminal? It will sure be nice to free up Front Street from all the taxis waiting for water taxi customers.

Most of the larger water taxis with inboard engines can't go in there as the water is too shallow. Maybe someday they will dredge it out

All that money spent and the large water taxis carrying the greater number of people can't use it......great planning....

Loansum, it was always said by many here that that would be a problem. Isnt it equally true of the supply barges that were to be routed back there?
