IQUIQUE, CHILE (BNO NEWS) -- A major earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 struck off the coast of northern Chile on Tuesday evening, prompting tsunami warnings for Pacific coastlines in the region, seismologists and officials said.

The 8.0-magnitude at 6:46 p.m. local time was centered about 83 kilometers (52 miles) northwest of Iquique, the capital of the Tarapaca Region in northern Chile. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it extremely shallow, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center immediately issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coastlines of Chile, Peru and Ecuador, while a tsunami watch was in effect for Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica. It was not immediately known whether a tsunami had been generated by the earthquake.

For the geographically challenged readers --- this tsumani warning affects the PACIFIC coast, not the Caribbean .......
As for the earthquake part - it hit thousands of miles away.
So very sorry for those affected - that was a monster quake - but no worries here in Belize.

Hope it's not an indicator for trouble in Los Angeles...

To digress to a whole other area - LA - there have been a bunch of small quakes there in the past few days and the prevailing wisdom is a bunch of small ones release pressure and make a big one less likely - provided the small ones are on a significant fault zone. Unfortunately that would not seem the case for Chile, where there were some temblers in the 6's in the same area leading up to this 8.2. Ergo - either it will or won't shake today and the big one is coming or it isn't.

I think you can however reasonably predict that So-Cal job-attendance is down a bit today due to surfers heading out to see if there are some excellent large waves in the 'Bo and elsewhere along the coast.
