On February twenty-first, the Golden Princess Casino at the northern border closed its doors. Fifty-seven employees were terminated while ninety-six persons were relocated to the other Princess Casino at the border. The abrupt shutdown was a result of difficult financial times attributed to exorbitant rent and a drastic slow-down of patrons from across the border. But there is news tonight that those doors may be reopening soon under new management. In January 2014, the Grand Belize Entertainment Group announced plans to build a world class casino resort and spa, and there are news reports tonight that the group has been granted a gaming license and has secured the location of the former Golden Princess Casino. Grand Belize Casino Hotel has said that it plans to operate approximately five hundred slot machines, twenty table games, a brand new fifty-room hotel, over twenty thousand square feet of event space, and multiple first class food and beverage offerings.
