Tiriso Galvez, officer at the Belize National Transport Dept. demonstrates the proper way to use the breathalyzer.

As part of the Belize National Road Safety Demonstration project, the Belize Transport Department has donated a breathalyzer to the San Pedro Traffic Department (SPTD). The breathalyzer is a device used to measure alcohol levels in the blood using a breath sample. This device seeks to crack down on irresponsible driving and prevent traffic accidents caused by drunk driving.

Mayor Daniel Guerrero of the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) and Head of the SPTD Chris Nuñez were on hand to receive the breathalyzer during a short ceremony held on Thursday, April 10th to commemorate the implementation of the Road Safety Project.

Traffic departments across all municipalities and cities have also been equipped with a breathalyzer.

If people are driving responsibly, and obey all the regulations that we have been begging for then they most likely will not even be stopped and tested.
I would like to see a list of the regulations they are interested in enforcing. Mayor Danny was on TV yesterday morning and outlined them. Here's what I can remember:
No overtaking another vehicle that is moving while in town.
Speed limit 15 MPH
No reckless driving
Obeying traffic signs
Driving without a license - including children driving
No drunk driving

No how can anyone object to these?

I would hope that they will add bicycle safety to their list.
Many times when I am in town and prepare to turn right I find a bike beside me trying to pass. I really do fear taking one of them down someday. They also need to obey things like one way streets; nothing like coming around a corner head to head with a bike going the wrong way.

Come on guys - everyone knows the alcohol greases the business wheels on this island. They are not going to destroy their goose.

We beg for them to do something - don't groan when they do.

Wonder how many citations have been issued with the previous traffic enforcement tool, the radar gun? Seems the taxis and dump trucks are still speeding along their merry way.

I have seen some drivers from the traffic dept. Speed along to pass others.
Same guys always in a hurry to get 2 seconds in front of the other guy....
Kids on bikes trying to get to and from school, maybe one day.
When someone gets hurt bad or killed they will enforce the law to everyone equally .

Everyone made fun of me when I said we have drivers going by our house at 50mph. Well, I'm not backing down from that statement. I'm not saying everyone, but it's more than just a couple. It's ridiculous, dusty, BAD FOR BUSINESS, and most importantly, DANGEROUS!! (And yes, the traffic department is definitely in the category of SPEEDERS! Not 50mph, but definitely in the 30mph range.) The locals, and now some of the tourists, are walking or riding their bikes with shirts or bandana's over their faces in order to be able to breath and to try and keep the dust out of their mouths. Truly an embarrassment to the island!

I stopped at the stupid stop sign approaching the round-about the other day and watched two traffic wards parked in front of Richie's not budge when the three golf carts ahead of me didn't even slow down.
I stopped and mentioned it to them and their response was "but you did." They really need to stop playing favorites.

On a positive not I stopped to chat with Moose at the side of the road the other day he was chatting with a female traffic warden. A cart came by with a very young lad driving. The office donned her helmet and started her scooter and went after them.
