Symposium on Archaeology and Anthropology in Belize
A symposium on archaeology and anthropology is underway in the Cayo District. Elaine Berry explains.
“The 12th annual meeting for Belize Archaeology and Anthropology Symposium is taking place at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel in the Bedran Hall under the theme, ‘Ancient Mayan, Domestic Economy, Subsistence, Commerce and Industry’. Celine Solis, Research Assistant at the Institute for Social and Cultural Research spoke to Love News about the 4-day symposium.”
“We’re here at the 12th annual Belize Archaeology and Anthropology symposium. This symposium is the third year that the Institute of Social and Cultural research is joining the Institute of Archaeology in hosting. The primary objective of this symposium is the dissemination of information about research being carried out in Belize. In previous years we’ve heard of archaeologists coming in and they have been sharing their information but there has been an influx of people interested in Belize, about our anthropology and social issues, our historical issues and they are here also sharing information they have been uncovering through their research here. We have presenters who range from doing research in Creole in the Creole culture; we have Myrna Manzanares, immediate past president of the National Creole Council making a presentation this year. We also have Francis Humphreys, who is currently the Chair of the Belize History Association making a presentation. So, it’s really an opportunity for Belizeans in general and not just academics to find out more about our country and not only about archaeology but also about the history, culture and to uncover that aspect of research in Belize.”
“For the next four days, a number of presenters will be presenting on topics such as The Mayan Forest, Exploring Slave Society of Voice 18the Century Belize and the domestic economy of Caracol. The symposium ends on Friday with a presentation ends on Friday with a presentation by the Chan Chen group.”
The symposium is an annual event and ends on Friday.
