Gulf low dissipates

A tropical low has run out of time to develop, but the threat for flooding and mudslides remains in southern Mexico and neighboring Central America.

The area of low pressure that AccuWeather.com meteorologists have been monitoring has moved inland and is dissipating, ending the potential for it to become the Atlantic Basin's first tropical depression of the year.

However, the concern for downpours has not lessened.

Unsettled conditions will continue over southern Mexico and part of Central America into next week between the remnants of the low and additional tropical moisture.

Daily rainfall rates of 3 to 5 inches are likely with isolated reports of over 10 inches in the area from southeastern Mexico to Guatemala and Belize through the weekend. Over the past 24 hours ending late Saturday morning, local time, near Heroica Veracruz, Mexico has seen over 8 inches of rain.

The rainfall will act as a double-edged sword.

"While the rain can lead to long-term and short-term drought relief, it can also lead to incidents of life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides in the region," AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Rob Miller said.

Conditions may be favorable for a tropical system to develop over the eastern Pacific early next week and the area of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean near the Yucatan Peninsula could make another attempt to generate a weak system later next week.

Drenching showers and thunderstorms could then be steered over part of Florida and the Bahamas in such a case.

As threatening as the skies have looked at times, San Pedro has seen only drizzle the last several days. Very pleasant though the sun has nearly always been obscured.

AccuWeather is clearly not "accu" and must not give a hoot - you'd think with all their $$ they'd make a phone call to see if it's really raining?

they are speaking of the general area. notice their "rain zone" stops right at the northern boundary of Belize doesn't include Belize...

On Ambergris Caye this morning sympathy for the forecaster is low :-)We have overcast sky with calm sea. Wind is from the East SE at 3 mph and our expected high is 86. Rain would be refreshing.

From Belmopan... 08:45 BZT

There is still rain around, moving from Guatamala towards the ENE but very slowly. . .. . We had some rain in Belmopan around 6am, yet that is not showing up on the Radar, so these appear to be very small isolated rain showers.. . . . . The Satellite picture is less turbulent than it was recently. . . . .But the upper clouds are now in sight, moving from from Africa in the East ( Long White arrow ), which is a clear sign that we are moving into the Hurricane season. . . .Although early Hurricanes more frequently start out of the Pacific, some crossing over into the Caribbean. . . .. .Mid Hurricane season, most come from near Africa.. ..Then late season Hurricanes can start right in our back garden, in the Southern Caribbean, just south of Belize.

This pattern is more to do with the Sun, being near overhead, so heating the Sea, most in May and August, bringing that Hurricane forming turbulent line off Africa, northwards, in June.
