FISHING REPORT

March 22 - March 30 2014

Weather Conditions: The week began with picture perfect conditions - the kind you read about. At the end of the week the skies stayed clear but the wind started to blow!

Winds: ESE 5 - 15 mph, then it went ESE, SE with gusts up to 33 mph.

Air Temperature: 80 - 84 0 F.

Water Temperature: 78-82 degrees

Moonphase: Last Quarter March 24th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Mike "Parker" was here from The Fly Shop. Of course everyone in his group showed up with their fly boxes totally equipped with the best flies for their saltwater flats experience at El Pescador. Everyone in the group landed bonefish and Parker was right there to help guide their experience. And his fabulous wife Kelly was a great addition. Tom and Ron landed bonefish but their story gets better! Laurelle's face was beaming all week. She and her boyfriend Tim both landed bonefish with Captain Erlindo. They really appreciated Erlindo's "fishy" style of guiding. So nice "bonyfish" on fly, you guys! Steve - nice going and your story gets better with Captain Cesar! The father and son duos also got into some nice bonefishing. Ryan and Nick with Captain Kechu, Bill and Patrick with Captain Emir - they were close to the slam and those bonefish soon become very important! Rob and Debbie had big fun with Captain Cinoeh. They landed their bonefish but their dream happens in the next section. Ed was here with his lovely wife Lisa and his dad Ed. They all landed bonefish and then look for their big action under "tarpon!" Lisa's brother Mike was fishing with his wife Gaylynn and Captain Raton. They landed bonefish while Captain Raton cooked them an incredible shore lunch. Kevin and Erica, our "South African" friends both landed bonefish. Kevin became obsessed over tarpon so he is now a lost cause. Stuart landed bonefish with Captain Alex . The weather represented this tropical time of year with the fish in a "happy," mode. Fish and anglers have their personalities. Somedays are better than others. I watch a lot of anglers go out and see what the day will bring them. But when good friend Bill W is in town you can't help see that big smile from the time he puts his foot on the dock until the big hug goodbye. So Bill, I know you have received many "pins,' from your El Pescador family, but it is my distinct pleasure to have honored you with your bonefish pin. Bonefish represent the "heart and soul" of the flats. Thank you for your big smile all week!

PERMIT (Palometta): Holy Smokes! On March 24th we had 9 permit landed on fly! It's "spring break" time. Father and son Bill and Patrick practiced their cast before their trip. They showed up ready and eager. Patrick was so appreciative of every step of learning and growing. It all paid off. They both landed permit on fly with Captain Emir. Duane and Jake were fishing with Captain Cesar. And on March 25th Jake landed his beautiful permit and on March 28th, his dad Duane landed his permit! Nick was wade fishing with his dad Ryan. Ryan was with Captain Kechu when he heard his son's, "yahoo.." Yes, Nick landed his first permit wading the flats by himself! I think Mike's comment was, "that was better than sex" He landed his first permit on fly with Captain Raton and was floating around from that point on. Steve went out with Captain Cesar one day and landed his permit on fly. Kevin and Erica have been fishing a couple of weeks now and looks like they might be neighbors soon! We hope so. Kevin landed a permit on fly with Captain Vince. We have to remind him of this because he is now tarpon obsessed and needs to remember that this was pretty incredible! A permit on fly is incredible! Just sayin. I'm convinced it was Debbie's "not taking no for an answer attitude," that made it happen for her husband Rob. Rob wanted a permit on fly really bad! Captain Cinoeh made it happen for him his last day out there! Tim was also one happy guy! He landed his permit on fly with Captain Erlindo. There were so many wonderful stories this week but his one stole my heart. Tom is 85 and loves his fly fishing. He was fishing with Ron and Captain Gilberto. Ron is very accomplished angler and really appreciated being out there each day. But when they came back from the dock and they had both landed permit on fly, we all rejoiced. How cool is that? Big smiles all around. And yes, there was some celebrating.

TARPON (Sabalo): My job share partner Ed Blank is tarpon crazed. His El Pescador family could not have been happier for him this week! Ed's wife, the lovely and fabulous Lisa, arranged a surprise birthday party for Ed. His birthday was March 26th. Ed and Lisa were fishing with Ed's dad, Ed and Captain Tomas. I don't know, Ed and Tomas just have this crazy luck when they go tarpon fishing. We are starting to call Ed, "Tarpon Ed," and this is why. Ed landed 4 tarpon on fly in one day, and jumped others. His dad landed tarpon on spin and he is in his mid 80's! He is also in great shape. And then Lisa jumped 4 one day, and the next day went out and landed one! Captain Tomas was beaming. I'm pretty sure that was all the landed tarpon for the week. We had a lot of anglers jump tarpon, but these three were the only ones that landed them! What an incredible birthday tarpon week for you Ed! Your El Pescador family loves you and so do the tarpon!

SNOOK: Still around!

OTHER SPECIES: Stuart landed two beauties on fly with Captain Alex. And yes, they made it to the dinner plate. Lots of barracuda, jacks and snappers.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, CI Special

FOR PERMIT - Turneffe Crab, Avalon, Big Squimps!

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Chartreuse toad, 3/0 on 50 or 60 lb test for our resident tarpon - a nice selection of color.

Guide of the week: Captain Tomas for making it happen with Ed, Ed and Lisa! I lost track of how many tarpon were jumped, but 5 landed on fly and one on spin!

This Week's Summary:

The weather brought in big tides and incredible fishing. Like I said, we had a lot of wonderful stories go on this week. Stories and memories that will last lifetimes. Rob asked me, "What makes this work? What makes El Pescador work?" There are a lot of things that could be said to answer that question. But the one thing we do know is that witnessing dreams come true is a good thing to be around. We give out pins to honor the angler's achievements, but this pin represents so much more. It was great to see several of our fishing friends this week. Greg was able to come up from Roatan and fish with Biill. They were chasing tarpon between telling tales with a few Belikins thrown in. Bill you're family at EP. As I head out to chase fish in cold waters, my job share partner Ed is starting his week with a few tarpon under his belt. Everyone is thrilled to see you back Ed. Have a great six weeks sharing your passion for fly fishing with the staff and guests of El Pescador. And Happy Birthday!!!

Cast to your dreams!

FISHING REPORT

March 30th- April 6th, 2014

Weather Conditions: Generally fair, windy weather mostly sunny.

Winds: 15-20 from the East on Sunday, calming to a perfect 5-10 East breeze Monday then building back to 15-20 for the last 4 days of the week.

Air Temperature: High 80's, for the High. Mid 70's, for the lows.

Water Temperature: 75 degrees

Moonphase: The new moon was on on March 30th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Cynthia and Daniel brought their kids Kate and Patrick for a getaway and a little fishing with Capt. Kechu and Capt. Cinoeh. All earned their bonefish pins early on. What fun!! Bonefish were happy to eat flies with very little prejudice, brothers Will and Ben nailed them, Mary, Brandi, JB, Bill, Neil, Kevin, Larry, Eric, Ryan, Kevin, Larry all landed bonefish in decent quantities. Our friends from the U.K. Mark & Trudy, Nigel and his 2 sons Simon and Nick and buddy Ivor got their first taste of Belize bonefish to start their trips. John and Jennifer busted through the tarpon. Raford and Pam got in some bonefish in between some tries at tarpon fishing. Maureen landed her first ever bonefish and first ever fish on a fly rod! There was lots of wading going on because of the windy conditions making it difficult to pole a boat effectively.

PERMIT (Palometta): Lots of shots, but only "Her Highness the Queen of all permit in the land", came through. Jean was the hero of the week hooking and landing a permit while wading with Captain Kechu. Neil was closing in on his goal of a permit everyday and finally got 2 to eat the last day, so close! Brandi became obsessed with permit and will be back to even the score very soon.

TARPON (Sabalo): Scott from Cody teamed up with Capt. Emir for a perfect fly rod tarpon around 40 pounds on Tuesday. John (Scott's son) had a tarpon eat maybe a foot off his rod tip. They were eyeball to eyeball, a staring contest tarpon 1 John 0. JB became addicted to tarpon in the first hour of his trip. The saga started with his first cast ever to a tarpon.. a jaw- dropping jump throwing the hook back at him. He made up for it the next day with a fish to the boat thanks to Capt. Tomas. The Fly Shop's fearless leader Kara wrestled with her first poon but came up short with Capt. Alex. After a spectacular eat and jumping exhibition, the hook came back slightly bent which indicates a shallow penetration into some bone! This fish was originally reported at 40 pounds but estimates have been growing daily to world record proportions. Ryan's last day was special when a very large fish ate and raced directly under the boat and out the other side almost breaking the rod, the jump on the other side of the boat dislodged the fly to gain his freedom. This all took place in 3 seconds everyone was shaking their head, holy cow! Joe and Maureen landed tarpon on the last day - 3 to be exact with Captain Vince in control.

Grand Slam: Alas. None this week. I blame the wind.

OTHER SPECIES: A big Jack for 10 year old Kate, Cudas for Patrick ( Kate's older brother) Spanish Mackerel, Skipjacks, and Snappers.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlies in white, tan, pink, Christmas Island Specials, Gotcha, Bonefish Bitters in amber, Bunny Gotcha

FOR PERMIT - Christmas Island special.

FOR TARPON - Chartreuse bunny fly, White toad, White Deceiver

Guide of the week: Vince for 3 tarpon on a windy day for John and Maureen.

This Week's Summary:

The Fly Shop of Redding brought a great group of anglers down this week that made our lodge an even better place to live and work. My heartfelt thanks to Kara (of The Fly Shop in Redding CA) for her undying enthusiasm for our sport that made all of us here at El Pescador a little happier each day..

FISHING REPORT

April 6th - April 12th, 2014

Weather Conditions: Generally fair weather partly sunny. Just a couple showers.

Winds: 15-20 from the East on Sunday, finally settled down on Tuesday with a front coming through - so we traded wind for some clouds. A north wind took over on Wednesday giving us eternal low tide at the lodge, while other places were eternally high tides for the same reason. Winds switched to a kinder 5-10 mph out of the east later in the week.

Air Temperature: High 80's, for the High. Mid 70's, for the lows.

Water Temperature: 76 degrees

Moonphase: The first quarter moon was on April 7.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Marie and Mike got 5 their first afternoon after the seminar so something must have worked! Everyone hooked bonefish daily. The entire Orvis seminar of Ken, Scott, Mike, Jim, Brian, John, Marie and Bill had no issues with our bones. Glen the Orvis host was awesome! Roland and Jeff took every other day of to do some DIY fishing and ended up with some bonefish everyday with and without a guide! Josh picked up a 5 pounder while fishing his own in the back lagoons with his newlywed Helen taking the winning picture of a chunky 5 pounder. Alan and Andrew got into some bonefish on their first day. The second Orvis seminar got off to a great start with Reid, Dick, Dick, Michael, and Gary getting into swing the first day with some bonefish action.

PERMIT (Palometta): Scott was on his honeymoon with his lovely bride Alison and got to head out for some bonefishing. They teamed up with Capt. Jr. for a permit on windy Sunday to produce the first permit of the week!! Roland hooked a permit while wading on his own up the beach but it did not stick long. Knox had a half dozen shots at her first permit ever, ending up with a few follows but the line never went tight for Capt. Alex. Honeymoon Helen was teased by both Captain Cinoeh and her husband Josh for making a great cast to the wrong fish. Apparently she spotted a fish at 9 o'clock at the same time Cinoeh called 12 o'clock for the permit. Convinced she saw the permit Cinoeh was talking about she threw directly at her 9 o'clock fish while Cinoeh's permit swam safely away at 12!! Her fish turned out to be a barracuda! Alan got spooled by a big permit even though Capt. Kechu tried to chase but there just wasn't time, the fish was too fast. Our repeat friend John hooked his first 2 permit but none made it to the boat. Both John and Captain Luis were so close to John's dream permit.

TARPON (Sabalo): Joe and Maureen continued their tarpon ways into this week with at least one tarpon a day with Capt. Vince. Roland had the usual tarpon fever stories and once he hooked up everything went wrong, line was stepped on wrapped around the reel, found some sandals in the back, and a pair of pliers to get tangled on. Mayhem, but what a hoot! Repeat guest Jim was able to land his biggest Belize fish at 60 pounds thanks to his wife Lindsey giving up the bow for the day and for Capt. Tomas' tarpon savvy! Reid tangled with a tarpon out on a bonefish flat on his first full day with Capt. Raton. Some Migratory fish should be starting to show in the next few weeks!

Grand Slam: Nada - Scott gave it a go but was only able to nick a tarpon. Several people got shots at all 3 species but to no avail.

OTHER SPECIES: Snappers, Jacks ( Jim's was 30 pounds!), Cudas, Ladyfish, Houndfish, Leather fish

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Gotcha, small crab in tan, Christmas Islands, Crazy Charlies

FOR PERMIT - Pearl Christmas Island Special size 4. Peterson Shrimp

FOR TARPON - White toad, Black Death

Guide of the week: Capt. Tomas for the big tarpon for Jim, which was Jim's biggest Belize fish to date!

This Week's Summary:

The Orvis Seminar began on Sunday with some classroom knot tying and on to the casting platform and then to strip setting and playing a bonefish, as well as guide lingo and tactics. The second Orvis Seminar arriving late in the week will overlap into next week.

FISHING REPORT

April 20th- April 26th, 2014

Weather Conditions: Generally fair weather partly sunny with just a couple of scattered showers.

Winds: Sunday 5-8 mph from the East, blowing harder Monday - easing up Tuesday and continued moderate for the rest of the week.

Air Temperature: High 80's, for the High. Mid 70's, for the lows.

Water Temperature: 80 degrees

Moonphase: The last quarter moon was on on April 22nd.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Our friends from Orvis were able to rack up bonefish at will, Joe, John, John #2, along with the returning cast of Bret, Byron, Bragg, David, Rich, Bob, Mike, Jim and Kevin. Lots of father and son teams Jim and Luke, John and sons Brett & Todd, Dad Gerard with son Gerry, Peter with son Jonathan Our Rio Fly Line group Simon, Marlin, Tim, Wayne, Zach, Jonathan, Leslie and Curt all got a taste of the prolific bonefishing here at El Pescador. Later in the week, Carnet, Patrick, Alex, and Bob came to El Pescador and started out with some solid bonefish tallies.

PERMIT (Palometta): Steve got the first permit of the week when he and his wife rented a golf cart and off he went north of the lodge wading on his own. His tale is that a group of three were tailing and his first presentation of a shrimp got no results, he tied on a crab and cast 6 feet away and waited for them to move near the crab one twitch and gam on! Brett had a bunch of shots at permit on Tuesday but they just wouldn't eat. Tim with the Rio group was first to score a permit and credits his Captain, Emir, for the effort. Since the permit was caught fairly early in the day they looked for a likely tarpon to complete the slam but to no avail. Permit for Rio Fly Line's Simon with Capt. Cesar Kevin who lives just down the beach fished with Capt. JR and landed a nice permit.

TARPON (Sabalo): Moon and Marlin jumped a couple tarpon to begin the week with Capt Emir. Simon got his first poon ever!! Yippeee! He thanks Capt. Cinoeh!! The next day he brought another to the boat while being guided by Capt. Cesar. Kevin jumped 2 today one was 80 pounds and bent the hook. Tarpon Ho for Tim of the Rio Fly Line Group.. a beautiful 50 pounder with Capt. Emir. A huge tarpon for Kevin thank in part to Capt. Jr. It was the biggest I have seen this year as it looks more like a migratory fish even though it was caught on our resident tarpon flats surrounding Savannah Caye. Smith Optics filmed a tarpon day led by Capt. Alex with Olympic snowboarder Scotty getting some tarpon fever!

Grand Slam: Week slams go to Simon and Tim from Rio for landing all three species over their 5 day trip. Not quite a grand slam but still noteworthy.

OTHER SPECIES: Jacks, Cudas, ladyfish, snappers, cudas

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - The usual suspects, CI Special's

FOR PERMIT - Hand tied shrimp by Tim, Avalon, small mantis shrimp

FOR TARPON - double white bunny, Grizzly tan bunny, Green toads, and Black Deaths

Guide of the week: JR for a huge tarpon, and beautiful permit for his guests!!

This Week's Summary:

Wow, the fishing was good, with tarpon eating often and permit available and biting daily. Pretty good weather all week helped the cause, as did a contingent of talented anglers here at the lodge. We had great fun with the Rio Fly Line and Smith Optics folks who were down testing gear and shooting some promotion photos and video.

FISHING REPORT

April 27 - May 3rd, 2014

Weather Conditions: Partly cloudy most of the week with some morning showers on Friday and Saturday

Winds: More wind than we wanted. 12- 15 most of the week out of the NE-E. Calming dramatically by the end of the week.

Air Temperature: High 80's, for the High. Mid 70's, for the lows.

Water Temperature: 80 degrees

Moonphase: The new moon was on on April 29th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): The Crested Butte Group dominated the lodge this week and it was the girls that led the way!: Jody, Michele, Ellen, Nicole, Janis, Rhonda, Macee, Suzanne, Alice all landed bonefish this week. For almost all of them it was their first bonefish ever. Their husbands did well too with Ken L., Ken F., Sam, Bill, Bone, Craig, Tommy and Steve all stepping up to the challenge. Other guests like Jonathan, Bruce, Linda, Alex, Bob, Garnet, Patrick added to the bonefish total. One boat had 44 in one day, not bad for less than ideal weather and anglers new to the salt!

PERMIT (Palometta): Jody and Michelle both hooked permit the first day but were not able to land them for Capt. Tomas. Ken L. came through for the Crested Butte group with a nice permit with Capt. Hilberto early in the week.

TARPON (Sabalo): Clearly Janis and Alice were the tarpon queens in the able hands of Capt. Vince with Janis landing 2 and jumping a few more Alice jumped a real big fish. Over the next few days, Alice was able to land her first tarpon and Janis landed 3 more. Mid week Will fished with Capt. Cesar and landed 2 poons on the fly as they found some in a dense mangrove area.

Grand Slam: None

OTHER SPECIES: Jacks, Cudas, ladyfish, snappers, cudas

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - It works ~ if it is a small bonefish pattern it will work sometimes lead eyes like the CI Special's, or a simple Gotcha, Cree Charlies in pink, Crazy Charlies, Rabbit Charlies etc.

FOR PERMIT - Christmas Island Special

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Deceivers in Green and white,

Guide of the week: Vince for his 6 tarpon week for Janis and Alice.

This Week's Summary:

It was great having Jason and Dane from the Crested Butte Fly Shop hosting a great group from Texas, 20 in all, and all had a blast! The wind was just relentless until very late in the week so it kept the permit and tarpon number in check.

FISHING REPORT

May 4th - May 10th , 2014

Weather Conditions: Partly cloudy to begin the week with more sun mid week, cloudy late in the week

Winds: Winds calm to start the week with 2-8 mph ranging from many directions (as light winds here often do) with strong winds developing for most of the week. Wind at that time was 10-15 out of the East/Northeast

Air Temperature: High 80's, for the High. Mid 70's, for the lows.

Water Temperature: 81 degrees

Moonphase: The first quarter moon was on May 6th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Dale, Chad, Deed, repeat guests Bill and Shay, Julie, Sandy, Lin, Bruce, Linda, Jim, Neil, Rick, Sm. Bruce, John, Father and son team Jay and Jim, Julie and Sandra, were all successful when they fished for the silver ghosts of the flats. Many of these were "first bonefish ever" and special kudos to Diana who on her own, decided to learn to the art of fly fishing. With 2 hour lessons she was off catching bonefish the first day! How many people can say the first fish they caught on a fly rod was a bonefish! Who knows how far she will go as she and Capt. Alex got some quality fishing time in and her skills skyrocketed. Just as determined Brinton and Lin worked hard at developing their fly-fishing skills this week and were rewarded with more and more fish every day while working with one of our certified casting instructors ( Capt. Luis.)

PERMIT (Palometta): Our returning guest Bill landed a nice 25-pound fish with Capt. Tomas at the controls. During breakfast on Tuesday, Julie and Sandy decided that they would each catch permit that day. "Your wish is my command" according to their guide JR and sure enough a pair of 12 pounders were landed. Our good friend Mike came back for the umpteenth time to sharpen his permit skills and was blessed with a bunch of shots with Capt. Emir but couldn't connect, despite a half dozen follows. Nothing is more frustrating to have 2 permit chasing the fly at once, only to refuse it at the last second!

TARPON (Sabalo): Dale got a dream tarpon on his last day with Capt. Alex, A nice 90 pound fish. As they were landing it several other groups of big fish came past! The ladies boat of Sandy and Julie used Capt. JR's skills to get 2 tarpon for Julie. Jay was able to land a couple resident poons on his outings with his Dad, Jim, and his guide Luis. John had a thrilling fight with a tarpon on his last day of fishing with Capt. Luis as well. Capt. Tomas teamed up with returning guest Vaughn to fight for some tarpon that just wouldn't stay buttoned up.

Grand Slam: None

OTHER SPECIES: Jacks, Cudas, ladyfish, snappers

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlies, CI Specials size 8, the usual suspects.

FOR PERMIT - Avalon

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Green toad. White toad

Guide of the week: A tie goes Captain Alex for his huge tarpon and hard work with several beginning fly fishermen and Capt. JR's double permit day for Julie and Sandy.

This Week's Summary:

The tough winds put the brakes on the tarpon and permit fishing success rate. We still hooked a few but none came to the boat once the winds kicked up mid week.

Cast to your dreams!

FISHING REPORT

May 11th - May 17th, 2014

Weather Conditions: Some big wind with sunny skies turned to low clouds and rain.

Winds: ESE 10 - 20, E 10-20, ENE 5- 15 (choppy seas), N 5 - 15, NNE 10-20, NE 10-20.

Air Temperature: High 80's for the High. Mid 70's for the lows.

Water Temperature: 75-80 degrees

Moonphase: Full moon on the 14th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Mr. Bonefish was really appreciated this week! We had tough wind and clouds so Barry and Mark made the most of it and found some really fun bonefishing. Big tails (for us) and skinny water = pure fun. They landed some dandies and it was very satisfying! Bonefishing with fly is really the heart and soul of flats fishing. Permit and tarpon are always nice - but it's a different experience. While bonefishing - it is a great time to listen to your guide, stay relaxed and aim. A nice presentation to the fish with fly or spin will always make a difference with success. Julie was here with her husband Bill. They have been here before so they know the game. Julie was working on her fly casting and was thrilled with her bonefish and a variety of snappers, including Mutton Snapper! Howard brought his son Jake on a fun fishing vacation as a graduation present. They love to fish and thought that they would use their fly rods as a back up to spin. However, they braved it and landed several fish on fly! They also left here today as better anglers ~ Just sayin. Eric and Lonnie organized a fantastic fishing vacation for their company contractors. They went out in some tough conditions with a few hangovers and had a great time with a fly and spin. I think we converted a few to fly and they plan on returning with their families. It's not that one way of fishing is better than another - but it is fun to try new things. I will say, a bonefish ripping out flyline after a nice cast and presentation is nothing short of thrilling.

PERMIT (Palometta): Julian and Chris are here from the UK. They have been chasing permit, but it has been really tough. For permit on the fly - you really need the sun. Looking for pushes of fish and tails is possible but desperate. They pulled the plug and went bonefishing. Greg had a few really nice shots with Captain Hilberto, but the permit missed the fly. Yes, when a 30 lb permit does a 180 to find the fly - he missed it. That's a fish we all would have loved to see. Captain Luis founds some nice permit - Howard made the shot, but a bonefish took it! No permit landed this week.

TARPON (Sabalo): The migratory tarpon are here! Captain Vince and Captain Cesar have been telling me about 100 pound fish down by Long Caye and Hicks Caye. Doug had two big bites, but nothing landed. Danny had a few great eats with Captain Cesar guiding. Cesar said some shots were 40 feet! Ken also had some nice shots, but the fish were not on the bite that day. We did not have any tarpon landed this week, but there were some great eats on both fly and spin. I have a feeling this next week it's going to crack open!

SNOOK: Still around! Some tight shots up close to the mangroves.

Grand Slam: None

OTHER SPECIES: Barracuda on fly and spin: jacks, jacks and more jacks: ladyfish; snapper - all on fly and spin. And yes, Mutton Snapper on fly. If this is something you are interested in doing - we've got em!

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, Bunny Gotcha's, CI Special's (orange, pink and pearl), small crabs.

FOR PERMIT - Turneffe Crab, Avalon, Big Squimps!, Mantas shrimp patterns - size 4.

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Chartreuse toad, White toads and bait fish patterns.

Guide of the week: Captain Vince. Vince has had all his anglers into migratory tarpon this week despite some really tough conditions. He also was very encouraging to his anglers and they all reported experiencing a big fun time. Congratulations Vince!

This Week's Summary:

Coming home to familiar faces we've seen here at El Pescador is a special treat. Really fun to see Barry and Mark, Bill and Julie and all the incredible staff here at El Pescador. Steve and Chris had an amazing time in Holland and shared pictures of them surrounded in tulips! I returned from weeks of chasing steelhead in the Pacific Northwest and felt pretty lucky as I felt the warm saltwater on my bare feet walking to work. No wool here! Our anglers had a tough week of weather. It's very rare that we would get a cold front from the north this time of year, but it happened. The fish didn't like it and became scarce. Everyone gets the "good sport" award for heading out on dark days trying to make something happen. And as I write this, it's a picture perfect morning. Flat seas and sun. While I wish everyone could experience perfect days all the time, it's not going to happen. Fishing required showing up prepared. It's what you do with the conditions that makes the memories. It's great to back home in Belize.

FISHING REPORT

May 18th - May 24th, 2014

Weather Conditions: Sunny with cloudy spells. A few showers occurred. Wind stayed up with mostly high pressure.

Winds: ENE 10 - 20 mph

Air Temperature: 78-92 degrees F.

Water Temperature: 75-80 degrees

Moonphase: Last Quarter was on the 21st

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Huge clouds of mudding bonefish seen up in the Park and in the lagoon. maybe coming back from spawn? We are talking about thousands of bonefish. This was really fun for Barbara who was visiting Ali from Toronto. She landed her first bonefish on fly with Captain Raton. And the Scurlock family was here for a family reunion. Ray - the patriarch at 90 was the first up in the morning ready to go! The family landed lots of bonefish on fly and spin. This family is very serious about their fishing! Henry kept us laughing and fully informed on his catch for the day. Robbi was here with Ken and this was her first time fly fishing for bonefish. And she landed a few! It was really fun to watch her determination daily out on the casting platform. I know a few trout that are going to go flying through Colorado waters now that she has her strip set! Chris was here from World Cast Anglers in Jackson Hole. He said he had never seen so many fish! Carl and Betty were a real treat. They both landed bonefish on fly. Congratulations anglers. It was windy but you made it happen!

PERMIT (Palometta): Well, the only two permit landed on fly just so happened to go toward the two SLAMS this week! Ferdy landed his beautiful 18lb permit on a crab fly. He was with Captain Cesar. Then, George went out with Captain Cesar three days later and he landed his permit on fly first thing. Of course, Cesar mentioned the slam, and away they went. Two beautiful 15 - 18 lb permit of fly landed this week.

TARPON (Sabalo): OK then. Ferdy was down by Long Caye with Captain Cesar and landed what Cesar said was at least a 120 lb tarpon on a 10 wt! The rod broke at the very end by the boat as it took one last surge. What a fish! This was part of Ferdy's slam. Then, after George landed his permit, Cesar said, "let's go for the slam!" George said, "Well, of course my huge ego said YES!" and then he did one roll cast to a nice 30 lb tarpon in a tight lagoon, and the tarpon without hesitation ate his fly! Kevin really deserves the "Tarpon" award for the week. He went out everyday with Captain Tomas and had action. He had shots, misses, takes.and then on the last day, he landed his tarpon! See picture. Savannah was slightly off color - making it perfect for white flies to pulse through the water finding tarpon who chased and ate with reckless abandon. Thank you Kevin for getting our fly tying bench motivated! And congratulations to the three of you for your success. David and Lindsay will be back. Now that they have seen what fishing for big tarpon over skinny shallow water flats is all about - I'm afraid we created a new addiction.

Grand Slam: Captain Cesar guided his anglers into TWO Slams this week! Congratulations to Ferdy and George who will now be honored with a plaque on our Grand Slam board!

OTHER SPECIES: Barracuda on fly and spin: jacks, jacks and more jacks: ladyfish; snapper - all on fly and spin. And yes, Mutton Snapper on fly. If this is something you are interested in doing - we've got em!

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, Bunny Gotcha's, CI Special's (orange, pink and pearl), small crabs

FOR PERMIT - Turneffe Crab, Avalon, Big Squimps!, Mantas shrimp patterns - size 4.

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Chartreuse toad, White toads and bait fish patterns.

Guide of the week: Captain Cesar for TWO slams in three days with two different anglers! Way to go Captain Cesar. You have created great memories for Ferdy and George.

This Week's Summary:

Ferdy is the only German at the lodge this week. He is a riot. His passion for fly fishing can be described only as bubbling enthusiasm. He said he will let all of Germany know about all the fun here at El Pescador. Walking down the dock, Ferdy told me, "I wear my most lucky shirt today! It is from New Zealand. I always have good luck with this shirt!" When he came back, he had slammed on fly! 500 pictures later and a ton of stories about each day out on the water. We'll get some of those pictures out soon for everyone to see. For me, I just love it when our anglers come back to fish here. Kevin, George and Bobbi, Dave and Donna, Mark just brought his family and he was here last month Rob and Donn showed up yesterday well armed Anyway, our EP family loves it when you return. We like to see you take ownership with your familiar EP life. It makes us feel good!

Cast to your dreams!

FISHING REPORT

May 25th - May 31st, 2014

Weather Conditions: The week started with sunny skies, a few thundershowers and big 20 mph wind. The tropical wave showed up on Saturday creating overcast skies, with less wind and rain.

Winds: ESE 10 - 20, choppy seas.

Air Temperature: 78-86 degrees F.

Water Temperature: 75-80 degrees

Moonphase: New Moon on the 28th

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): We had some terrific family fishing this week here at EP. Joe brought his son Harrison, and his friend Chris brought his son Trip for two days of some fun bonefishing! They got out there on the casting platform in 20 mph wind to make sure they were warmed up and ready to go. The practice paid off as they were all awarded their bonefish on fly pins! Les was here with his son Luke and they too landed bonefish on fly! Marc was here a month ago and brought back his beautiful family. Chase and Hunter were up first thing in the morning ready to go out with their dad and Captain Jr. They practiced their double haul and all three of them landed bonefish on fly. The Caplinger Family had a fun sampler this week and they plan on returning. Next time Rebel will fish! Jeep and Kat have been having a great time with Captain Sinoe and have landed some really nice bones on fly. Roy has been here several times, and this time he has his sons Wade and Lawrence with him. Wade knows the drill - he has been here fishing with Captain Kechu. This is Lawrence's first bonefishing trip. At first Lawrence was wide eyed and wondering how it was all going to come down, but now he has bonefishing on the flyrod wired. They have been watching "Buccaneers and Bones" and feel that Captain Kechu is portrayed as too aggressive. They want the world to know that they love him and that he really is a gentle soul! (Kechu is having a mellow week!!). Dominic and Hillary are here with their friends Danny and Shawna. They too have been watching B&B and are thrilled to be here in person. Hillary and Shawna have been practicing their casts and Dominic and Danny are packing each day with as much fishing as possible! And we were thrilled to Dave and Donna back. They went out with Captain Alex for three days and Donna landed the biggest bonefish! (I think she was more excited about the barracuda, but she did land a big bone!). Dave continued on with Captain Kechu chasing large fish in the sea. Rosie and Joe also landed bonefish and we hope to see you two back here soon! Congratulations to all of you. This was a tough week for wind, but you showed outstanding sportsmanship and went out there and made things happen!

PERMIT (Palometta): We were really, really hoping Dominic would get a permit on fly with Captain Vince. It could still happen? No permit landed this week. Some great shots, but that was it.

TARPON (Sabalo): Tarpon fever at the lodge this week. Rob and Donn left at 4:30 for several mornings with Captain Emir and they were rewarded! Donn landed his tarpon on spin and the next day Rob got his on fly! John surprised his brother David with a fishing trip to EP for his big 50. Well, Dave landed his tarpon on spin with Captain Cesar, and then John landed his tarpon on spin the next day with Captain Cesar! (see El Pescador's facebook page). Congratulations to all of you.

BARRACUDA: Stories.barracuda takes the bonefish for a ride. Happened twice this week!

Grand Slam: Captain Cesar guided his anglers into TWO Slams this week! Congratulations to Ferdy and George who will now be honored with a plaque on our Grand Slam board!

OTHER SPECIES: Some really nice jacks landed on fly. Big fun.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, Bunny Gotcha's, CI Special's (orange, pink and pearl), small crabs.

FOR PERMIT - Turneffe Crab, Avalon, Big Squimps!, Mantas shrimp patterns - size 4.

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Chartreuse toad, White toads and bait fish patterns.

Guide of the week: It's a tie. Captain Cesar and Captain Emir both got their anglers into tarpon this week! They left early in big wind and came back with a boat of big smiles.

This Week's Summary:

Wow. I can speak for all of the people who work here at El Pescador and say a big Thank You! We were so happy to see Dr. Marc bring his family to El Pescador after just being here last month! Dave and Donna - we love you guys. Rob is family and Donn we hope you become a neighbor! Roy and Wade - thanks for showing Lawrence what goes on here. Mike and Sue, I know Erlindo is thrilled to see you two! Cindy and Roy were here and it was hard to say goodbye. So until next time! And thanks for all the volleyball game support. And here we are, the first of June! Looks like an action packed month for us as we are sold out for several weeks! If you are reading this and looking forward to your trip, practice that cast! Even 5 minutes here and there really makes a difference. I'm saying this because when you look at that giant tarpon chasing your fly, you won't be calm. And a big heartfelt thank you to the guides we work with. This guide team has grown so much over the past few years. They show up every morning knowing their anglers are so excited to make their dreams happen. And the El Pescador guide team does just that - make it happen! And as we say here in Belize, "Why not?"

Cast to your dreams!

FISHING REPORT

May 31st - June 7th, 2014

Weather Conditions: Overcast skies with big wind in the beginning of the week. Later, the wind died down as the occasional thunderstorm came through.

Winds: E 10 - 20, choppy seas.

Air Temperature: 78-86 degree Fahrenheit; 23.3 C - 28.8C

Water Temperature: 75-80 degrees

Moonphase: First Quarter on the 5th.

WHAT GUESTS WERE CATCHING:

BONEFISH (Macabi): Captain Erlindo lit up when he was describing Sue's big bonefish: "It was a big one manit ate that fly and ran with the reel" Sue was awarded a nice bone and also caught a decent mutton snapper on fly. Her husband Mike landed several fish and also did a nice job piecing his ear! The guides call them, "red snapper." I told Sue that landing a mutton snapper on fly is a big deal! One time my fishing buddy Diana Rudolph said to a Bahamian guide, "I'll give you $200 US right now if I get a mutton on fly." Ricardo showed her the fish, and of course she caught it. Everyone was happy. Matt caught two bonefish on fly with Captain Emir. Matt is eleven and owns a solid 50 ft cast. His buddy Kyle was a bit intimidated by the whole fishing scene here - that was the case until he landed his first bonefish off the dock with a jig! By himself! You just don't know when that fishing rod is going to lure you in! Congratulations to Kouri who had also never fished before. She caught her first bonefish on fly with Captain Kechu. Laura arranged this trip for her family so they could hang out together in a beautiful place and also allow her fish crazed son, Mike, to fish the flats. Mike is confident with a flyrod and caught several bonefish on fly. His father David caught some nice bones on spin. Cathy, Roger, Kim and Mac all had big fun and landed several bonefish on fly. Brad and Blake started out wondering how it was all going to play out, but they kept a positive attitude and found big adventure and fun fishing everyday they went out with Captain Gilberto. They too landed some nice big bones on fly. Paul and David have been fishing buddies for a long time. As we all know, fishing friendships are very special. It was great to hear them tell stories of trips their flyrods have taken them. This was David's first saltwater adventure and he was able to land several bonefish on fly. Tim and Kevin have also been long time fishing buddies. They both landed several bonefish on fly with Captain Tomas and had a great time. Father and son duo Mark and Mark Anthony went through the diving course and had a great time fishing for Mr. Bonefish. Sean and Ali - it was a pleasure, and nice work on the bonefish on fly. Rob brought his fishing family and they got it done! Rob, Marion, Molly and Brian all landed bonefish on fly. Another father son combo - Dana and Andrew. They both landed several bonefish on fly with Captain Sinoe. Father and son duo David and Sam also landed their first bonefish on fly! Stephanie and Andrew were quite happy with their bonefish on fly! Congratulations everyone. You had some tough wind and little sun, but you made it happen!

PERMIT (Palometta): There were some shots, but it was really tough due to the lack of sun to see the fish. No permit landed this week.

TARPON (Sabalo): Captain Cesar said, "Let's go for it!" Phillip and Jim ventured out down south and they turned what look like a slow day into epic tarpon fishing. They jumped ten on spin and Phillip landed a beauty. Check it out on our facebook page! That was really great ~ but it got better when they went out the next day and Jim landed his first tarpon on spin. Happy guys. Jon and his son Jon David had two tarpon takes on fly with Captain Raton. The fish ate, ran, threw the fly.Jon kept stripping and bam! The fish hit again! Missed the set but a ton of action. Jon David was fishing spin when his reel started singing. Fish wasn't landed, but it sure got his attention. Savannah is a bit off color - so it makes it tough to see the fish, especially with the lack of sun this week. Sean - next time!

BARRACUDA: Mike and Sue landed some really nice Barracuda with Captain Erlindo. (see photo!) Barracuda fishing has been really fun. When the bonefishing gets tough, try cuda! Big air and big fun or fly or spin.

OTHER SPECIES: Sue's mutton snapper on fly. Some snook seen close the mangroves, but no real shots.

FLIES THAT WORKED

FOR BONEFISH - Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, Bunny Gotcha's, CI Special's (orange, pink and pearl), small crabs.

FOR PERMIT - Turneffe Crab, Avalon, Big Squimps!, Mantas shrimp patterns - size 4.

FOR TARPON - Black Death, Chartreuse toad, White toads and bait fish patterns.

Guide of the week: Captain Cesar for getting Phillip and Jim into tarpon this week. And Happy 27th Birthday Cesar!

This Week's Summary:

Wade was here with his father and brother last week. They took off after some fun fishing and then his wife, two sons and daughter showed up! It's really fun to see eleven year old Matt talk fly fishing with the other guests. He has the wrap down! So yes, old home week once again as we have had many of our guests return for their El Pescador fix! The Grassedonio family, Mike and Sue and Cutthroat Angler's own, Jim Buckler. We had big wind which made it tough on our anglers and guides! I was really proud of everyone for making each day a new episode. Big smiles came back to the dock at the end of the day with a ton of support for family members and friends. I know that these vacations you take with your family, or long time fishing buddy, or brand new fishing buddy - all made for good fun life memories. Thank you for sharing your passion for fishing. And thank you for coming to see us at El Pescador!

Cast to your dreams!
